Job summary

Commonwealth War Graves Commission seeks a Mobile Support Team Gardener to join our horticultural teams across France. The role involves supporting multiple sites, undertaking horticultural and masonry tasks, and traveling as required to Marseille, Corsica, and Spain.

35 hours per week with a 4-day week trial in 2026. The ideal candidate will hold horticulture qualifications or equivalent experience, a valid B licence, and be capable of operating larger machines with appropriate certifications.

Qualifications

• Diploma or qualification in horticulture or masonry experience.
• Valid B licence holder.
• Van with trailer licence (BE) desirable.
• C licence would be an advantage.
• CACES 1 certification required.
• Strong organisational and communication skills.
• Willingness to work across multiple sites in France.

Responsibilities

• Support horticultural teams and backfill in various tasks as directed by team leaders.
• Travel across France Area, potentially to Marseille, Corsica and Spain.
• Assist with horticulture projects requiring larger machines (irrigation, hedges, drainage).
• Perform masonry tasks (kerbs) and install fences, access paths, headstones and signs.
• Work within teams as a Gardener when needed.
• Occasionally act as driver-delivery person delivering equipment by lorry or van.

We are looking for a Mobile Support Team Gardener F/Mto join our teams at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) which honours the 1.7 million men and womenof the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars,ensuring they will never be forgotten. Our work commemorates the war dead, frombuilding and maintaining our cemeteries and memorials at 23,000 locations inmore than 150 countries to preserving our extensive records and archives. Ourvalues and aims, laid out in 1917, are as relevant now as they were 100 yearsago.

Contract type : Permanent

Salary : To be determined according to profile

Working hours: 35 hours per week. 4-day week trial in 2026 for the period from March to October (paid for 35 hours)

Jobdescription:

Provides support to horticultural teamsperforming exceptional tasks or techniques (horticultural work; masonry; operating machinery).
Backfills in various horticultural teams onan ad hoc basis as directed by the respective team leader within France Area.

Keyresponsibilities:

• Works as a Gardener, providing additional support in the different teams across FA as and when required and often at short notice (travel up to Marseille; in Corsica and Spain)
• Is actively involved in horticulture projects and renovation tasks requiring larger machines, at the different sites across FA, eg irrigation, hedges, drainage, etc
• Performs masonry work (laying kerbs)
• Installs fences; access paths; headstones; signs
• When operational needs dictate, works within an existing team as a Gardener
• Assumes the role of driver-delivery person, as required. Delivers equipment by lorry and/or van to various groups in France, as required.
• Operates mini-excavators and loaders, if in possession of the relevant Caces certification
• Assists the Mechanics to maintain and repair different machinery and at different sites, as required
• Works on horticultural tasks at different sites across FA that require larger machines, such as Verti draining, scarifying and over seeding

Profile required :

• Diploma or qualification in horticulture or significant experience in the field of horticulture and masonry
