We design and develop foundational technologies that enable connected, immersive experiences in a broad range of communications and entertainment products and services. We license our innovations worldwide to companies providing such products and services, including makers of wireless communications devices, consumer electronics, IoT devices, cars and other motor vehicles, and providers of cloud-based services such as video streaming. As a leader in wireless technology, our engineers have designed and developed a wide range of innovations that are used in wireless products and networks, from the earliest digital cellular systems to 5G and today’s most advanced Wi-Fi technologies. We are also a leader in video processing and video encoding/decoding technology, with a significant AI research effort that intersects with both wireless and video technologies. Founded in 1972, InterDigital is listed on Nasdaq.InterDigital is a registered trademark of InterDigital, Inc.**The team**InterDigital Video Lab brings together a team of highly motivated, fast-paced, and highly skilled researchers with strong backgrounds in video compression, video processing, machine learning, and standardization. We actively contribute to leading video standards organizations, including ISO/IEC MPEG, ITU-T SG16, JVET, IETF, SMPTE, ITU-R SG6, 3GPP, DVB, and ATSC, alongside mid- to long-term incubation activities. The Media Services research group at the InterDigital Video Lab has broad experience in energy efficient technologies in video streaming and high dynamic range imaging. The research group is dedicated to improving video industry technologies, creating authentic, energy-efficient, and high-quality streaming solutions.Energy-Aware Media project in the Media Services group is dedicated to making the entire video delivery chain more energy-efficient, from content creation through end-user display, while preserving the authentic, high-quality experience users expect. The team develops technologies, tools, and standards that reduce the energy footprint of streaming video at scale. What you'll work onThis position focuses on the streaming segment of the energy-aware delivery pipeline. You will design algorithms and systems that make video streaming more energy-efficient end-to-end, including adaptive bitrate (ABR) ladder design, CDN and edge delivery strategies, network-adaptive streaming, and live streaming workflows. Concrete examples of problems you might tackle include energy-aware encoding ladder optimization, CDN cache and routing strategies that reduce end-to-end energy cost, and low-power live streaming architectures based on latest live streaming protocols.**Job Summary**InterDigital Research & Innovation seeks a qualified candidate to join the Video Lab as a Research Scientist focused on energy-aware video streaming. The candidate will join the Energy-Aware Media project and contribute to designing innovative algorithms, methods, and standards that improve the energy efficiency of video streaming workflows, with a particular emphasis on the streaming layer. The role spans both conventional and learning-based approaches and offers a clear path to taking ownership of dedicated research workstreams as the candidate grows into the role.**Responsibilities*** Identify research opportunities in video streaming with a focus on energy efficiency, including ABR ladders, CDN and edge delivery, network adaptation, and live streaming.* Research, develop, and implement new algorithms and prototypes in the identified areas.* Contribute to existing research tracks within the team and grow into leadership of dedicated workstreams over time.* Disseminate results through invention disclosures and technology reference implementations, tradeshows and exhibitions, and publications in peer-reviewed conferences and journals.* Promote the team's research in standards organizations such as MPEG and 3GPP, as well as SVTA, DVB or ATSC* Establish and maintain collaborations with external industrial partners and academic groups.* Help supervise non-permanent team members, including interns, PhD candidates, and post-doctoral researchers.**Minimum Qualifications*** PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, image processing, signal processing, applied mathematics, or a related field.* Expertise in conventional and learning-based algorithm development applied to video streaming, image processing, signal processing, or networking.* Publications in peer-reviewed conferences or journals in a related area.* Software development skills in Python and C/C++.* Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset for working across the team and with external partners.* Curious, creative, and motivated personality.* Professional working proficiency in English, written and spoken.**Nice to have*** Hands-on experience with video streaming technologies — such as DASH, HLS, CMAF, LL-HLS / LL-DASH, WebRTC, MoQ.* Familiarity with CDN architectures, edge computing, congestion control, or QoE measurement.* Experience contributing to standards organizations (MPEG, 3GPP SA4, DASH-IF, CTA WAVE).* Experience converting research into inventions, prototypes, and products.* Proficiency in French**Location:** Rennes, FR.
