Job description

We are Helsinki Shipyard – celebrating 160 years of shipbuilding excellence. Since 1865, we have been designing, building, and commissioning tailor‑made, high‑class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. We proudly continue the legacy of Helsinki’s own Shipyard, right in the heart of Helsinki.

With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi‑purpose icebreakers. We've built over 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!

We are currently seeking a Weight Engineer to join our team of 20 professionals in the Naval Architecture department. This team is responsible for the conceptual design of specialized vessels ranging from icebreakers to passenger ships. The team develops initial vessel concepts during the sales phase and collaborates with design teams to finalize the vessel’s design during the construction phase. The typical length of the initial concept development phase is from a few months to a year.

The Weight Engineer is responsible for calculating, analyzing, and tracking weight distribution throughout the entire shipbuilding process. The role involves calculating vessel weight and developing weight management and estimation tools. As a Weight Engineer, you work both independently and also in collaboration with several Yard departments to coordinate weight data across teams to guarantee contractual compliance. You will also work closely with a Project Engineer and a Hydrodynamics Specialist.

This is a challenging role that takes you right to the heart of shipbuilding. You will work across multiple engineering disciplines, gaining a broad understanding of how the different elements of a complex vessel come together. The work combines theoretical analysis with practical engineering, and the real challenge lies not in the mathematics itself, but in navigating the complexity of shipbuilding and forming information from different disciplines into a reliable picture of the vessel as a whole.

Previous shipbuilding experience is not required. This role is well-suited for someone transitioning into the marine industry or starting their career in this field

To succeed in this role:
  • You hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with weight management software and tools is seen as an advantage.
  • You have strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • You have a passion for working with numbers and have a detail‑oriented approach.

Helsinki Shipyard is now in a phase of transformation and growth. With a strong order book and fascinating, diverse projects, we’re shaping the future of specialized shipbuilding. Now’s the time to join us and find your place in this growth journey."

Why you should join us:
  • Our dynamic work environment and diverse projects will offer you a chance to expand your knowledge and learn something new every day
  • Sustainability is central to us — we participate in joint Helsinki sea monitoring, where the quality and harmful substances in the water are monitored.
  • We have offices in Helsinki, Turku, and Pori. We support hybrid work arrangements and work together at the office at least a couple of days per week.
Ready to make an impact?

If you are a motivated and skilled engineer with a passion for innovation and a commitment to excellence, we would love to hear from you. Your contributions will directly impact the performance, efficiency, and comfort of vessels operating in diverse marine environments.

If you have any questions, please contact Timo Yrjövuori Head of Naval Architecture, timo.yrjovuori@helsinkishipyard.fi, or by phone +358 50 410 1461 during business hours.

As part of the selection process, candidates chosen for the role will undergo a routine medical check, which includes a drug test. For certain roles, a security clearance may also be required.
