Job summary

Elekta, based in Helsinki, seeks a Software Engineering Manager to lead a team developing advanced treatment planning algorithms for cancer care worldwide. This role combines technical and people leadership to advance radiation therapy capabilities into clinical practice.

Ideal candidates have PhD or MSc with clinical radiation therapy experience, proven algorithm development and team leadership, and a strong foundation in software design principles.

Qualifications

  • PhD or MSc with clinical radiation therapy experience.
  • Experience in algorithm development or clinical background with coding.
  • Experience leading, coaching or managing technical teams.
  • Strong knowledge of software development design principles.
  • Clear written and spoken English communication.
  • Collaborative working style and cross-disciplinary relationship building.
  • Lean or Agile development experience is advantageous.
  • Experience in medical device development is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach and develop a software engineering team working on treatment planning algorithms.
  • Define team priorities, goals and technical roadmap aligned with company strategy.
  • Provide technical leadership in radiation therapy, mathematics, physics, AI, and software architecture.
  • Support collaboration and coordination across teams and functions.
  • Hire, onboard, and develop team members to enable high performance.
  • Contribute to requirements engineering, architecture design and medical device docs.
  • Participate in risk management and maintain quality and compliance standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement in development processes and tools.
  • Stay current with software engineering practices and radiotherapy domain developments.

What You’ll Do At Elekta

As Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team developing advanced treatment planning algorithms that support cancer care around the world. You will combine technical leadership, people leadership and scientific expertise to help bring innovative radiation therapy capabilities into clinical practice.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, coach and develop a software engineering team working on treatment planning algorithms.
  • Define team priorities, goals and technical roadmap in alignment with company strategy.
  • Provide technical leadership in areas such as radiation therapy, mathematics, physics, computer science, AI, algorithm development and software architecture.
  • Support effective collaboration, communication and coordination across teams and functions.
  • Hire, onboard, mentor and develop team members, creating an environment where people can do their best work.
  • Contribute to requirements engineering, architectural design and medical device documentation.
  • Participate in risk management activities and support high standards of quality and compliance.
  • Drive continuous improvement in development processes, tools and ways of working.
  • Stay current with software engineering practices, standards, languages, tools and developments in the radiotherapy domain.
What You’ll Bring
  • PhD in a relevant field, or MSc combined with clinical experience in radiation therapy.
  • Experience in algorithm development, or a clinical radiation therapy background combined with coding skills.
  • Experience leading, coaching or managing technical teams.
  • Strong knowledge of software development design principles and methodologies.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both written and spoken.
  • A collaborative working style, with the ability to build trusted relationships across disciplines.
  • Experience with lean or agile development is an advantage.
  • Experience in medical device development is an advantage.
