University of Helsinki invites applications for a doctoral researcher position in the VODBIO project. You will generate 3D representations of trees and forest stands to support microwave VOD interpretation, linking field data with satellite observations.

The ideal candidate has a strong remote sensing background, programming skills in Python or R, and experience with TLS or GIS. The role includes fieldwork in diverse ecosystems and a PhD thesis of three peer-reviewed papers.

Qualifications

• Strong background in remote sensing, forest ecology, or geospatial data science.
• Proficiency in Python or R programming.
• Experience with TLS/terrestrial laser scanning and point cloud processing.

Responsabilités

• Develop workflows to convert TLS point clouds into quantitative structure models (QSMs) of trees and stands.
• Describe tree architecture, biomass, and water-content properties for microwave VOD modelling.
• Process TLS datasets and collect field data in contrasting ecosystems (Kenya and Amazon).
• Work with project partners, perform fieldwork, data analysis, and scientific writing.
