Job summary

St1 Nordic Oy seeks a Forward Deployed Engineer (AI & Software) to bridge business needs with rapid, deployable AI and software solutions. You’ll prototype, pilot, and scale projects in collaboration with business units across retail, energy-trade, and refinery operations.

You will work with senior engineers and platform teams to ensure governance, security, and compliance while delivering measurable value and long-term impact across the Nordic region.

Qualifications

• Solid engineering foundation: a few years’ experience building and shipping software or AI solutions, enough to deliver with confidence and grow toward a senior role.
• Hands-on depth in at least one of these areas: applied AI, cloud platforms, data engineering, or machine learning, with the curiosity to grow across the others.
• Strong delivery instinct: comfortable prototyping and iterating directly with non-technical users rather than from a fixed spec.
• Good translation skills: you turn a business problem stated in operational language into something buildable and explain trade-offs back clearly.
• Practical modern engineering: API design, integrations, version control, testing, deployment, and AI-assisted development tools.
• Fluent English (mandatory); Finnish, Swedish or Norwegian is an asset.
• Willing to travel occasionally to St1 sites across the Nordics and UK.

Responsibilities

• Scope, prototype, and ship solutions for prioritised use cases from St1’s Use Case Log.
• Build rapid prototypes and proofs of concept, validate them against clear success criteria with business stakeholders, and support evidence-based go/no-go decisions.
• Drive technical delivery for your use cases day to day, making pragmatic build choices with guidance from senior engineers and architects on the bigger decisions.
• Use AI-assisted and agentic development workflows to compress delivery cycles without compromising quality, security, or compliance.
• Work closely with end-users, the data and AI teams, software engineers, architects, and platform teams, translating field requirements into features and feeding learnings back into the roadmap.
• When a pilot proves its point, join the team that builds it for real, feeding your field experience and pilot learnings into a production-grade solution so nothing you ship is left as an orphaned prototype.
• Ensure every solution meets St1’s AI governance, data, security, and compliance requirements, including the assigned human oversight role for each use case.
