Job summary

Metsä Group invites applications for a Data Scientist to join the Digital & AI function in Espoo, Finland. You will transform complex business challenges into data-driven solutions using ML, optimization and generative AI, driving operational efficiency and innovation.

You will design, develop and evaluate AI-based solutions, collaborate with data engineers and software developers, and mentor junior scientists while communicating insights to stakeholders for strategic actions.

Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD degree in Applied Mathematics, Economics, Data Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or another similar discipline.
  • Strong expertise in advanced analytics, machine learning, optimization methods and mathematical modelling.
  • Experience in hypothesis-driven problem solving, experimentation and business case evaluation.
  • Excellent programming skills in Python and experience with data science libraries and SQL.
  • Deep understanding of Databricks ML and AI capabilities and modern cloud-based data science environments.
  • Knowledge of Azure AI Foundry, Azure cloud services and version control tools such as Azure DevOps Repos.
  • Experience in automating development and coding tasks via AI based tools like Genie Code, GitHub Copilot or similar.
  • The ability to communicate complex analytical concepts and results to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • establish best practices, development standards and governance models for data science and AI initiatives.
  • occasionally, you will work as a methodological mentor for more junior level data scientists and analysts.
  • communicate analytical findings and recommendations to stakeholders, helping turn complex insights into clear business actions and strategic decisions.

DATA SCIENTIST

to join our Digital & AI function in Espoo, Finland.

What is the job that awaits you?

As a Data Scientist, you will help transform complex business challenges into data-driven solutions that create measurable business value. By applying advanced analytics, machine learning, optimization techniques and generative AI, you will identify new opportunities to improve operational efficiency, automate decision-making and support innovation across the organization.

In this role, you will design, develop and evaluate machine learning, optimization and AI-based solutions, taking ideas from initial hypotheses and experimentation through to scalable, production-ready capabilities. You will work closely with business experts, data engineers and software developers to solve challenging business problems and unlock the value of data.

You will be responsible for managing experimentation portfolios and model inventories, assessing experiment outcomes and recommending the next steps, whether that means further refinement, MVP development or full-scale deployment. You will also help establish best practices, development standards and governance models for data science and AI initiatives. Occasionally, you will work as a methodological mentor for more junior level data scientists and analysts.

As a trusted advisor and subject matter expert, you will communicate analytical findings and recommendations to stakeholders, helping turn complex insights into clear business actions and strategic decisions.

This is a permanent position and you will report to Development manager, AI.

What are we expecting of you?

We are looking for a curious and business-minded data science professional who enjoys solving complex challenges through data, analytics and AI. You are comfortable working at the intersection of business and technology and can translate analytical insights into practical business value.

To succeed in this role, you should have

  • A Master's or PhD degree in Applied Mathematics, Economics, Data Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or another similar discipline.
  • Strong expertise in advanced analytics, machine learning, optimization methods and mathematical modelling.
  • Experience in hypothesis-driven problem solving, experimentation and business case evaluation.
