Job summary

Metsä Group Group Services is hiring a Data Scientist to transform complex business challenges into data-driven solutions using analytics, ML, optimization and AI. You will design, develop and evaluate AI-based models from hypotheses to production-ready capabilities, collaborating with data engineers and software developers.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD degree in Applied Mathematics, Economics, Data Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or another similar discipline.
• Strong expertise in advanced analytics, machine learning, optimization methods and mathematical modelling.
• Experience in hypothesis-driven problem solving, experimentation and business case evaluation.
• Excellent programming skills in Python and experience with data science libraries and SQL.
• Deep understanding of Databricks ML and Azure capabilities and modern cloud-based data science environments.
• Knowledge of Azure AI Foundry, Azure cloud services and version control tools such as Azure DevOps Repos.
• Experience in automating development and coding tasks via AI-based tools like Genie Code, GitHub Copilot or similar.
• The ability to communicate complex analytical concepts and results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Proactive, analytical and eager to challenge existing ways of working.
• Enjoy collaborating with stakeholders from different disciplines and can balance technical excellence with practical business needs.
• Ability to facilitate business problem definition workshops (seen as advantage).
• Most importantly, you are excited about using data, AI and advanced analytics to create real business impact and help shape the future of data-driven decision-making at Metsä Group.

By applying advanced analytics, machine learning, optimization techniques and generative AI, you will identify new opportunities to improve operational efficiency, automate decision-making and support innovation across the organization. In this role, you will design, develop and evaluate machine learning, optimization and AI-based solutions, taking ideas from initial hypotheses and experimentation through to scalable, production-ready capabilities. You will work closely with business experts, data engineers and software developers to solve challenging business problems and unlock the value of data. You will be responsible for managing experimentation portfolios and model inventories, assessing experiment outcomes and recommending the next steps, whether that means further refinement, MVP development or full-scale deployment. You will also help establish best practices, development standards and governance models for data science and AI initiatives. Occasionally, you will work as a methodological mentor for more junior level data scientists and analysts. As a trusted advisor and subject matter expert, you will communicate analytical findings and recommendations to stakeholders, helping turn complex insights into clear business actions and strategic decisions. This is a permanent position and you will report to Development manager, AI.
