The Philosophy Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minnesota) invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of applied ethics to begin September 1, 2026. Subfields of particular interest include the ethics of artificial intelligence, data, and digital technology. Candidates specializing in other areas of applied ethics are also encouraged to apply, as are candidates whose specialization relates AI, computing, or technology more broadly to metaphysics, epistemology, phenomenology, philosophy of language, philosophy of science, or philosophy of mind. The teaching load is six, four-credit courses per year (semester system). Ideal candidates will possess outstanding reasoning skills, excellence in teaching philosophy at the undergraduate level with the ability to connect with students from varied backgrounds and with varied interests, strong research potential, a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, and will provide service to the department and/or university. In addition to teaching courses in their area of specialization, qualified candidates should be well prepared to teach our department’s introductory course, The Person and the Good.

The University of St. Thomas is home to a thriving undergraduate philosophy program-one that graduates 30 to 40 majors each year along with an equally large number of minors. Our department is committed to sustaining and developing the Catholic intellectual tradition and we seek candidates who will both (i) support our university’s institutional mission and its emphasis on Catholic intellectual tradition and (ii) expand our department’s interdisciplinary outreach. Salary & Benefits

The University of St. Thomas offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits program, which includes:

  • Up to 100% tuition remission for employees and dependents upon eligibility;
  • Up to 50% tuition remission for spouses upon eligibility;
  • A generous employer retirement contribution of 9.4% of annual salary upon eligibility;
  • Medical, dental, and vision options;
  • Employer-paid disability, life, and AD&D benefits;
  • All eligible full-time faculty may request Parental Leave for the birth or adoption of a child.

The salary range is for this position is $65,000-$70,000.

The University of St. Thomas has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD (U.S. or foreign equivalent degree) in philosophy or a closely-related discipline
  • Or, alternatively, ABD nearing completion will also be considered
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching
  • Show strong potential for productive research/scholarly activities
