LeoVegas is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to lead the design and evolution of distributed systems powering real-time sports data, trading and pricing. You will provide technical leadership while delivering hands-on contribution to improve reliability and performance in a fast-paced, data-intensive sportsbook platform.

The role emphasizes architecture guidance, collaboration across teams, mentorship, and a strong focus on latency, throughput, and maintainability.

• Proven experience designing, building and operating distributed systems at scale in production.
• Strong backend Java experience (Java 21+).

As Staff Backend Engineer in LeoVegas Sports, you lead the design and evolution of distributed systems that power real-time sports data, trading and pricing for millions of customers. You’ll provide technical leadership while staying hands-on to raise engineering standards and balance long-term platform health with business needs. You collaborate across teams to simplify complexity, improve reliability, and drive scalable, event-driven architectures that live at the heart of a high-performance sportsbook platform. This role blends architecture guidance with practical delivery and mentorship, shaping our future in a fast-paced, data-intensive domain.

• Lead architecture and design discussions for scalable, resilient distributed systems and validate options via spikes and PoCs
• Drive simplification of complex systems while maintaining performance and code quality
• Identify and mitigate scalability, resiliency, and operational risks before production
• Improve observability, monitoring and readiness; reduce technical debt
• Promote event-driven architectures, performance optimisation, testing, automation, and CI/CD
• Mentor engineers through reviews, pairing, and technical guidance
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering Managers and Architects to translate problems into practical solutions
• Contribute to a culture of ownership, collaboration and continuous improvement
• Proven experience designing, building and operating distributed systems at scale in production
• Strong backend Java experience (preferably Java 21+), JVM internals, concurrency and multithreading
• Hands-on with Reactive Programming and non-blocking systems using Spring Boot and/or Vert.x
• Experience with Apache Kafka and event-driven architectures; familiarity with Redis or NATS
• Experience with Redis caching and with SQL/NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MariaDB, MongoDB)
• Experience with observability and monitoring platforms (Datadog, Grafana, Kibana) and debugging production incidents
• Strong system design and architectural decision-making; balancing latency, throughput, consistency and maintainability
• Ability to influence technical decisions and communicate with engineers, product managers and stakeholders
• Ownership and proactive leadership
