Staff AI R&D Engineer: Production Platforms

Job summary

dLocal is seeking a Staff Engineer in AI R&D to set technical direction and own the most challenging AI/LLM initiatives in production. You will lead architecture, governance and performance for agentic systems, working with peers and business stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable AI features in a regulated payments environment.

You will mentor engineers, define engineering standards, and drive improvements across teams while aligning with business goals and compliance requirements.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including senior-level scope.
• 2+ years hands-on with LLMs in production environments.
• Experience designing agentic or multi-step AI systems with tools and orchestration.
• Strong foundations in distributed systems and software architecture.
• Cloud infrastructure knowledge, preferably AWS, with secure, cost-aware design.
• Experience with observability, testing and evaluation of complex systems.
• Disciplined engineering practices: code review, CI/CD, automated testing.
• Hands-on daily use of coding agents to design and review software.

Responsibilities

• Act as technical lead for AI initiatives from design to production.
• Translate business goals into technical plans and milestones.
• Define reference architectures and engineering standards adopted by teams.
• Lead reliability, scalability, observability and incident learning for AI services.
• Mentor engineers and scale best practices across teams.
• Communicate decisions clearly to stakeholders with concrete trade-offs.
