Job summary

People Group is seeking a Head of Engineering in Denmark to lead multidisciplinary teams across mechanical, electrical, power electronics, automation, and process engineering. You will own end-to-end development of hydrogen energy systems, from R&D to industrialisation and commercial deployment.

The role requires strategic engineering leadership, strong regulatory knowledge, and international collaboration with EPC partners, utilities and customers.

Qualifications

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering.
  • 10+ years in complex industrial machinery and energy systems, with 4+ years in senior engineering management.
  • Experience taking complex hardware from prototype to multi-MW industrialization.
  • Knowledge of European codes and grid standards.
  • Fluent in English; additional European languages are a plus.

  • Lead and grow a multi-disciplinary engineering organization across Mechanical, Electrical, Power Electronics, Automation & Controls, Process and Systems Engineering.
  • Define engineering structure, hiring roadmaps, resource allocation, SOPs and quality frameworks.
  • Oversee end-to-end engineering for electrolyser systems, stacks, PPCs and modular Balance of Plant (BOP).
  • Drive DFMA strategies to enable rapid factory-based scaling and site installation.
  • Manage supplier relations, budgets, and KPI tracking including unit costs and uptime.

Role: Head of Engineering (Electrolysers/Hydrogen production)

The company:

With a strong focus on innovation and impact, they are playing a key role in shaping the future of energy systems.

The role:

The Head of Engineering will provide strategic and technical leadership across the engineering organisation, overseeing multidisciplinary teams spanning mechanical, electrical, power electronics, automation and controls, process and systems engineering.

The role will take ownership of the end-to-end engineering development of the company’s hydrogen energy systems, including electrolysers, stacks, power conversion units and modular balance-of-plant systems, driving the transition from R&D through industrialisation and into commercial-scale deployment.

With responsibility for engineering strategy, product optimisation, safety and regulatory compliance, supplier relationships, budgets and technical delivery, this is a key leadership position for an experienced engineering professional looking to play a central role in scaling innovative hydrogen technology from prototype to multi-MW commercial operation.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership & Team Management
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering organization spanning Mechanical, Electrical, Power Electronics, Automation & Controls, Process, and Systems Engineering.
  • Define engineering organizational structure, hiring roadmaps, resource allocation, and talent retention strategies.
  • Establish engineering processes, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality frameworks across the product development lifecycle.
  • Oversee end-to-end engineering execution for electrolyser systems, stacks, power conversion units, and modular Balance of Plant (BOP).
  • Drive system design optimization for efficiency, durability, footprint, degradation rates, and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
  • Lead Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) strategies to enable rapid factory-based scaling and modular site installation.
  • Manage technology transfer from R&D into production-ready engineering deliverables (schematics, cable schedules, P&IDs, 3D CAD models, bill of materials).
3. System Integration, Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure full alignment of electrolyser systems with European standards, regulations, and certifications (CE marking, ATEX/IECEx, PED, Pressure Equipment Directive, Machinery Directive, IEC 61511 / SIL, RED II green hydrogen guidelines).
  • Understand Process Hazards Analysis (PHA), HAZOP reviews, and Functional Safety implementations.
  • Collaborate closely with EPC partners, project developers, utilities, and off-takers to ensure seamless site integration and grid-coupling performance.
4. Operations, Budget & Vendor Management
  • Manage the annual engineering budget, capital expenditures (CapEx), and engineering software infrastructure.
  • Establish strategic technical partnerships with tier-1 suppliers (power electronics, membranes, porous transport layers, valves, compressor systems, and PLC hardware).
  • Track and report engineering Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including design freeze milestones, unit cost targets ($/kW), system uptime, and warranty rates.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Systems Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 10+ years in complex industrial machinery, energy systems, power electronics, chemical process systems, or hydrogen technology, with 4+ years in senior engineering management.
  • Familiarity with electrochemistry, fluid dynamics, high-voltage power conversion (IGBTs, rectifiers), P&IDs, control systems (PLC, SCADA), and safety systems (ATEX, HAZOP).
  • Proven experience taking complex hardware systems from prototype through industrialization to commercial field operation at multi-MW scale.
  • Strong working knowledge of European codes, standards, grid codes, and pressure/explosive atmosphere directives.
  • Fluent in English (corporate standard); additional European languages (e.g., German, French, Danish, or Dutch) are a strong advantage.
