Job summary

Afinitas, part of Barry-Wehmiller, seeks a Controls Engineer to design and implement automated production systems, handling electrical design, PLC programming, HMI development and robot integration. You will support machines through lifecycle from concept to startup and customer service, collaborating with engineering and product teams.

The role requires a controls engineering degree and hands-on experience with EPLAN, TIA Portal, and robotics. Travel to customer sites up to 25% is possible.

Qualifications

  • Controls Engineering Degree and ideally 3+ years’ experience in an electrical or control systems engineering role, within manufacturing/ plant industries.
  • Experience with both electrical hardware design and automation software development.
  • Familiarity with Electrical design CAD tools (all sites use EPLAN).
  • Experience in Developing, programming and testing PLCs (all sites use TIA Portal)
  • Experience with industrial robotics hardware and software programming.
  • Experience configuring, commissioning, and troubleshooting servo drives and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
  • Understanding of motion control, motor sizing, drive technologies, safety circuits, and machine integration.
  • Knowledge of industrial networks and communication protocols between PLCs, robots, drives

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and implement both hardware and software solutions for automated production equipment.
  • Design electrical control panels, I/O architectures, safety systems, and field device integration.
  • Perform testing, setup, commissioning, and optimization of control systems, drive systems, and robotic applications.
  • Provide remote and on-site technical support to customers and service technicians.
  • Collaborate with other departments to resolve technical/logistical issues.
  • Prepare system operation manuals and diagnostic aids.
  • Stay up to date on advances in system architecture for machine control.

The role encompasses both hardware and software aspects of machine control, including electrical design, PLC programming, HMI development, robot integration, drive configuration, motion control, and system commissioning. The Controls Engineer will support the complete machine lifecycle from concept and design through installation, startup, and ongoing customer support.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBLITIESDesign, develop and implement both hardware and software solutions for automated productionequipment.Design electrical control panels, I/O architectures, safety systems, and field device integration.Perform testing, setup, commissioning, and optimization of control systems, drive systems, and robotic applications of new facilities or upgrading of existing facilities.Use engineering skills and knowledge to assist customers with control systems problems for both remote and on-site technical support to customers and service technicians.Build and maintain a technical knowledge base by creating, maintaining and updating technical documents/procedures.Logging development processes, code changes, and technical specifications for future reference.Anticipate potential problems and provide solutions; detect unusual problems and promptly report to the supervisor.Collaborate with other departments to resolve technical/logistical issues.
