W2-University Professorship (f/m/d) in “AI and Biometrics”

We are looking for an outstanding personality who represents the fields of responsible artificial intelligence and biometrics in research and teaching at the Department of Computer Science and will be appropriately involved in the education of students in the study program Computer Science. The sought personality should have an outstanding scientific track record in the field of AI-driven responsible biometrics, such as in face recognition, and have published in competitive international venues (e.g., CVPR, WACV, IJCB, BTAS).

Research expertise is expected in the following areas:

  • Privacy in biometric systems (e.g., soft-biometric privacy)
  • Demographic and non-demographic fairness in biometrics
  • Explainability and transparency in biometric systems
  • Biometric reliability and uncertainty
  • Security of biometric systems (e.g., morphing, deepfakes, backdoor attacks)

The Department of Computer Science is pursuing five strategic research areas: Security, Data Science, Software Engineering, Quantum Computing, and Domain-Specific Computing. Connectivity to at least two strategic areas is required.

We expect the position holder to be willing and interested in working on applications for large-scale projects – especially interdisciplinary ones – to actively help shape new projects and to integrate into existing research institutions. Paderborn University offers excellent opportunities for this with research facilities such as the SICP - Software Innovation Campus, the Joint Artificial Intelligence Institute (JAII), the Institute for Photonic Quantum Systems (PhoQS), or the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing (PC²).

There is also the possibility of collaborations with the Heinz Nixdorf Institute (HNI) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronic System Design (IEM). We expect applicants to have experience with acquiring and conducting third-party funding projects, such as DFG projects. Furthermore, the ability and willingness to teach in German and English and to participate in academic self-administration are required.

Recruitment requirements: § 36 Abs. 1 Ziff. 1 to 4 HG NRW (University law of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia) (completed university degree, pedagogical aptitude, Ph.D. degree and additional academic achievements).

Applications from women are particularly welcome and, in case of equal qualifications and experiences, will receive preferential treatment according to state law (LGG), unless there are preponderant reasons to give preference to another applicant. Applications from disabled people with appropriate suitability are explicitly welcome. This also applies to people with equal opportunities in accordance with the German social law SGB IX.
