Hochschule Trier is seeking a dedicated candidate for a W2 Professorship in Engineering Mechanics and Strength of Materials. This role emphasizes practice-oriented education in collaboration with industries and includes teaching and research responsibilities at the Environmental Campus in Birkenfeld. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in interdisciplinary teaching and contribute to the academic self-governance of the university.
Around 1,600 students pursue their studies and research in attractive degree programs at Environmental Campus Birkenfeld of Trier University. We are the University of Applied Sciences, which has the highest level of research activity and third-party funding in Rhineland-Palatinate. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld stands for practice-oriented education, interdisciplinary projects, and a clear focus on future technologies. The degree programs combine traditional disciplines of mechanical engineering with modern areas of study – such as digital product development using CAD and simulation, the creation of digital twins for production processes, additive manufacturing, robotics, and industrial digitalization. A strong emphasis on real-world application is supported by numerous collaborations with industry partners. Currently, externally funded research projects with a total volume of approximately 20 million euros are being conducted. The professorship is responsible for teaching and research in the field of Engineering Mechanics and Strength of Materials. This includes, in particular, delivering courses in the fundamentals of engineering mechanics as well as the application and advancement of the Finite Element Method (FEM).
Commitment to research, development and interdisciplinary cooperation is a prerequisite.
In addition to a strong commitment to teaching, active participation in the university’s academic self-governance is expected.

A successfully completed university degree in mechanical engineering or a comparable engineering discipline is required. Applicants must also demonstrate excellent proficiency in German at level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as well as solid English language skills. The willingness to teach interdisciplinary foundational courses (e.g., mathematics, machine elements) and to offer courses in English is expected.
We are seeking a committed individual to represent and further develop the field of Engineering Mechanics and Strength of Materials within the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in the Department of Environmental Planning / Environmental Engineering (UP/UT) with a focus on mechanical engineering.
Applicants are expected to have strong academic qualifications and relevant professional experience in the following areas:
• Engineering Mechanics
• Strength of Materials / Fatigue Strength
• Technical Simulation of Mechanical Systems using FEM and DEM
Additional expertise and practical experience in at least two of the following fields is highly desirable:
• Structural Dynamics / Vibrations
• Multibody Simulation
• Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
• Development of digital learning environments and experience with hybrid teaching formats
A research focus in the area of mechanical simulation or model-based analysis of technical systems is explicitly encouraged. Interdisciplinary collaboration with existing research priorities at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld is welcome.

In addition to the general labour law requirements, the recruitment requirements include at least
1. a successfully completed university degree in the field of mechanical engineering or a related degree programme with a specialist focus on the above-mentioned requirements,
2. pedagogical aptitude,
3. a special aptitude for scientific work, which is usually demonstrated by a qualifled doctorate, and
4. in addition, special achievements in the application or further development of scientific knowledge and methods in at least flve years of relevant professional practice, of which at least three years must have been spent outside the university sector.
The appointment is made as a civil servant for life if the relevant legal requirements are met.
