Jobbeschreibung

Kiel University and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel aims to attract more qualified women to professorships.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Kiel University, and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel invite applications for a

W 3-Professorship in Benthic Biogeochemistry

The future job holder shall be responsible for the area Benthic Biogeochemistry in research and teaching. The Professorship is located at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (www.geomar.de) and is assigned to the Research Unit Marine Geosystems within the Research Division Marine Biogeochemistry.

We are looking for a suitable candidate with an excellent track record in benthic biogeochemical research and with a focus on regional to global marine biogeochemical cycles and processes, a PhD in marine geochemistry or a related scientific field (e. g. geology) and a strong commitment to participate in the research activities of the Marine Biogeochemistry Research Division. Application of existing and development of new scientific concepts in the field of benthic biogeochemistry at GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel (e. g. considering sea-going technologies and/or data science applications) is desirable.

Outstanding, pioneering research in the field of Benthic Biogeochemistry is expected. Experience in conducting multi-day cruises, ideally as a cruise leader, is required. The focus should be on benthic biogeochemical processes that are related to future changes on regional to global scales and can contribute to solutions to socially relevant issues. An interdisciplinary approach at the interface of marine geology, geochemistry, microbiology and/or biology is essential. The following topics can be the focus of research, but in general the topic of benthic biogeochemistry should be broadly conceived:

Deciphering benthic biogeochemical processes and element cycles on a regional and global scale, also using isotope systems Quantifying biogeochemical element cycles and their significance for current, future and past oceanographic and climatological processes using element transport modeling and/or data science/artificial intelligence Investigating changes of carbon sinks and sources and coupled element cycles in the seafloor due to climate change and elaboration of marine solutions, e.g. for active removal of anthropogenic CO2emissions, for other anthropogenic interventions and respective associated environmental impacts. Use of in situ/robotic technology for the spatial and event-driven investigation of benthic processes, their kinetics and areal quantification The scientific qualification is demonstrated by a clearly structured, independent research profile with an excellent publication record in international journals and successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding. It is desirable that suitable applicants complete the research portfolio of the RU Marine Geosystems towards process understanding of the entire ocean by means of in situ observations and their extrapolation using data sciences.

Experience as principal investigator or sub-project leader of collaborative projects is essential for a successful application. The successful candidate will join an established research group with excellent sea- and land-based analytical capabilities (labs & technical staff), sea-going equipment (incl. landers & rovers), as well as a longstanding expertise in coordinating large international research projects and knowledge and technology transfer. We expect a high willingness for interdisciplinary cooperation with other research areas at GEOMAR as well as with the marine sciences at Kiel University.
Teaching should be provided e.g. in the Bachelor's degree course “Geosciences” or in the English-language Master's degree course “Marine Geosciences”. The language of instruction in the Bachelor's program is German or English. The teaching obligation is based on the respective valid state ordinance on teaching obligations at universities (LVVO) of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Please refer to the recruitment requirements of § 61 of the Schleswig-Holstein Higher Education Act. Further information can be found on the homepagewww.berufungen.uni-kiel.de. For further information on the vacant position and the research unit, please contact Prof. Dr. Jens Greinert (jgreinert@geomar.de).

Kiel University is striving to increase the number of female scientists in research and teaching and therefore expressly encourages qualified women to apply. Women will be given priority if their aptitude, qualifications and professional performance are of equal value.

Kiel University is committed to the employment of people with disabilities: Applications from severely disabled persons and their equals will be given preferential treatment if they have the equivalent qualifications. We expressly welcome applications from people with a migration background. Application photographs are not required and we expressly request that you refrain from submitting any.

Applications including the usual documents (curriculum vitae, list of publications, list of courses taught, list of third-party funding acquired, research plan and teaching concept, copies of academic transcripts), should be submitted - preferably in a single PDF file - by21stSeptember 2025, indicating both private and institutional contact details (address, phone number, and email), to: Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, Olshausenstr. 40, 24098 Kiel, Germany (bewerbung@mnf.uni-kiel.de).
