Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Visiting Instructor is a non-tenure track position held by an individual who possesses all the qualifications to be appointed at that rank. The Visiting Instructor's teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor. To meet with students for office hours every week and to be available to communicate with students regularly. To attend department meetings, convocation, and other university-wide meetings as needed. To keep accurate attendance, provide syllabi by the first class day, grade assignments in a timely manner, to submit midterm and final grades on time, and to communicate with the department chair and other faculty as needed.

The normal teaching load is 12 credit hours each semester. The successful candidate will contribute to the special education program and the COE through the following efforts:

  • Teach 12 credit hours per semester of special education undergraduate level courses in traditional, hybrid, and online formats.
  • Supervise teacher candidates in the field.
  • Engage as a school-university partner.


Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications

  • Earned master’s degree in special education from an accredited institution by the date of employment.

Required Experience:

  • Experience with pre-service and/ or in-service teacher education, specifically in special education.
  • Considerable full time, K-12 teaching experience.
  • School-university partnership experience

Additional Considerations:

  • Expertise or experience in one or more of the following:
    • Supervision of teacher candidates
    • Mentorship of paraprofessionals
    • Knowledge of and experience with “grow your own” programming.
