The Faculty of Biology of the University Würzburg is offering a position at the Theodor Boveri Institute for Biosciences as

a University Professor (m/w/d) for Bioinformatics (grade W2)

to be filled at the earliest possible date as a civil servant for life.

The position is associated with the Chair of Bioinformatics at the Theodor Boveri Institute of Biosciences. The research focus of the professorship should complement the research focus of the Chair of Bioinformatics II of Prof. Dr. Kathi Zarnack in the field of nucleic acid regulation and gene expression.

The applicant should successfully and excellently represent a bioinformatics research topic in research and teaching, using innovative methods such as new approaches for single-cell analyses, the use of artificial intelligence, innovative statistical methods, mathematical modeling and network analyses. Possible areas of application include epigenetic regulatory mechanisms, mutational effects in DNA and RNA regulation, the characterization and design of nucleic acid enzymes, the modelling of nucleic acid therapeutics or the detection and characterization of modified nucleotides.

A close connection to the CCTB and the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDAS) is envisioned to anchor the methods of bioinformatics and artificial intelligence more firmly in the biosciences. The candidate is also expected to actively participate in the establishment and further development of research networks. A synergy with the other key areas of the Faculty of Biology, including cell, molecular, plant, insect and infection biology, is advantageous for the integration into research networks and new project initiatives of the Faculty. Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding and in international and interdisciplinary research cooperation is expected.

The teaching tasks include courses for the modularized degree courses in biology (Bachelor) and biosciences (Master) at the University of Würzburg as well as teaching introductory programming skills (all interested students), and, if interested, participation in teaching exports to computer science and medicine.

Qualification requirements are a relevant academic degree, pedagogical suitability, special aptitude for scientific work, which is generally demonstrated by a doctoral degree, as well as additional scientific achievements as described in more detail in Art. 57 para. 1 sentences 3 and 4 BayHIG. The additional scientific achievements should have been made in the field of Bioinformatics.

According to Art. 60 para. 3 BayHIG, an appointment to a civil service position is only possible until the age of 52. Exceptions are possible in urgent cases. Beyond this age, a non-civil service employment on the basis of a private-law contract would be possible. The University of Würzburg attaches great importance to the intensive supervision of students and doctoral candidates and expects its faculty members to also adhere to this commitment. The University of Würzburg aims to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore strongly encourages applications from suitably qualified female scientists. Severely disabled applicants with essentially the same qualifications will be given preferential consideration.
