An established academic institution is seeking a University Professor for Behavioral Physiology to lead research and teaching in insect behavior. This role emphasizes collaboration within research networks and aims to enhance the understanding of physiological mechanisms in insects. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of courses in Animal Physiology and Evolutionary Biology while fostering student engagement. The university is committed to promoting diversity and family-friendly policies, making this a unique opportunity for passionate educators and researchers to make a significant impact in their field.
The Faculty of Biology of the Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg
at the Theodor Boveri Institute of the Biocenter is offering a position of a
University Professor (m/w/d)
for Behavioral Physiology (grade W3)
(Chair of Zoology II)
to be filled for winter semester 2026/27
as a civil servant for life.
The successful candidate will represent the subject “Behavioral Physiology” in research and teaching and strengthen the focus on insect research.
The Chair of Zoology II (Behavioral Physiology) is part of the Biocenter of the University of Würzburg. For this professorship, we are looking for a team-oriented , committed and internationally recognized personality who will represent the entire range of the subject of animal physiology in teaching. The research focus should be in a modern area of insect behavioral physiology; conceivable approaches include sensory physiology, neurophysiology, metabolic physiology, ecophysiology, evolutionary biology or related approaches. A research focus preferentially on insect species other than Drosophila is desirable. The physiological basis of insect behavior should be studied at a mechanistic level with a clear link to the organism as a whole.
Experience in obtaining third-party funding is required.
The applicant should be willing to cooperate with other research groups at the Biocenter and to actively participate in research networks in the focus area "Würzburg Insect Research - Behavior and adaptation in a changing world" as well as be open for research on social insects. The tasks of the professorship include the continuation of the chair's own bee station.
In terms of teaching, the professor will participate in the courses offered in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in the fields of Animal Physiology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior and will offer basic and subject-specific courses in the Master's degree program.
Qualification requirements are a relevant academic degree, pedagogical suitability, special aptitude for scientific work, which is generally demonstrated by a doctoral degree, as well as additional scientific achievements as described in more detail in Art. 57 para. 1 sentences 3 and 4 BayHIG. The additional scientific achievements should have been made in the field of Behavioral Physiology.
According to Art. 60 para. 3 BayHIG, an appointment to a civil service position is only possible until the age of 52. Exceptions are possible in urgent cases. Beyond this age, a non-civil service employment on the basis of a private-law contract would be possible.
