Tasks and expectations

We are looking for a candidate (m/f/d) who is internationally recognized with outstanding achievements in a current research area in theoretical chemistry and quantum chemistry. The candidate will be expected to develop and implement theoretical methods for the quantitative study of molecular processes with a connection to sustainable chemistry, such as photochemical, catalytic, or redox processes, as well as for the description of molecules in electronically excited states.

  • The professorship is part of the Sustainable Chemistry research focus at the Department of Chemistry. The holder of the position is expected to participate in the core research area of the Rhineland-Palatinate Research Initiative SusInnoScience: Sustainable chemistry as the key to innovation in resource-efficient science. Networking within Faculty 09, with the Max Planck Graduate Center, the Rhine-Main universities, and the research institutes in Mainz is expressly desired. We expect the candidate to successfully acquire competitive third-party funding. The candidate will also be expected to actively participate in and design ongoing and future research projects with faculty participation.
  • The future holder of the position is expected to represent the field of theoretical chemistry and quantum chemistry in its full breadth. We expect the candidate to hold courses on the topics of theoretical chemistry and quantum chemistry in the Chemistry and Biomedical Chemistry bachelor’s and master’s degree programs as well as the Chemistry teacher education program, and to hold courses in both German and English. We expressly invite applications from international scientists; however, teaching in German from the beginning of the appointment must be ensured. The holder of the position actively contributes to advancing the contents and concepts of the degree programs, e.g., in terms of modern didactical methods and the application of digital tools in teaching.
  • A readiness to take on tasks in academic self-administration within the university, the faculty, and the Department of Chemistry is expected.
  • In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in section 49 of the University Act (Hochschulgesetz) of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The candidate is particularly expected to have pedagogical training and the qualification to lead an independent work group.
  • The state of Rhineland-Palatinate and JGU are committed to the close personal mentoring of students and therefore expect teaching staff to have a strong presence at the university. A cooperative, team-oriented and proactive work attitude, strong communication skills, and the willingness to assume responsibility – including further professional development in accordance with JGU’s leadership guidelines – is also expected.
