Underwriting Assistant

Sompo is recruiting an Underwriting Assistant to support various business lines within our Underwriting team based in our Cologne office.

As an Underwriting Assistant, you will provide processing and underwriting support to the business units (BUs). You will work closely with Underwriters and the wider Service team, including offshore teams, to ensure service activities are completed within the specified service delivery timeframes.

You will also act as an account representative by responding to service matters and coordinating with the appropriate business partner for resolution.

Your main responsibilities will involve:
  • Providing support to Underwriters in underwriting operations, procedures, and policies.
  • Building strong relationships and providing prompt customer service to all internal and external customers.
  • Completing associated business processes such as Guidewire data entry, eDocument platforms (ImageRight), Excel updates, sanctions checks, and others.
  • Supporting and conducting regular quality checks on tasks assigned to and completed by the offshore team.
  • Issuing policy documents accurately, including policy schedules, wording, endorsements, invoices, and certificates of insurance, in collaboration with the Policy Administration Team.
  • Establishing processes to monitor work on hand and set priorities to complete tasks within turnaround times.
  • Handling complex work items, investigating issues, and applying problem-solving skills through effective collaboration to achieve win-win resolutions.
  • Serving as a liaison for underwriters and brokers to track, manage, and prioritize insurance applications and services.
  • Providing cross-training to fellow Underwriting Assistants and receiving cross-training to reduce key man dependency.
Skills and Professional Experience:
  • Prior experience in an insurance/reinsurance company is desirable.
  • Knowledge of commercial insurance products is desirable.
  • Experience in underwriting support functions, data entry, and policy administration is desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to see work through to completion with minimal supervision.
  • Proactive and a 'can-do' attitude.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Team player.
  • Languages: German and English are required; Dutch, Flemish, or French proficiency is desirable.
