Job Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill multiple temporary Cook 2 positions with flexible FTE between 0.60 (approximately 24 hours per week) to 1.0 (40 hours per week) for the Division of Extension and Engagement’s Extension 4-H Youth Development Program. These positions are located at the Oregon 4-H Center in Salem, Oregon.

The position is part of the OSU Extension 4-H Youth Development program. The Oregon 4-H Center is a youth camp and conference facility about eight miles from downtown Salem, in a rural area not on public transportation lines. The 4-H Center hosts outdoor school, summer camp, and other retreat activities.

Food service is integral to the outdoor school and camp experience, serving groups from 25 to 200. Flexibility, initiative, teamwork, and communication skills are essential. Responsibilities include coordinating meal production, preparing foods for various diets, maintaining supplies, record-keeping, and providing lead work to lower-level staff. Key Responsibilities

The Cook 2 demonstrates commitment to inclusive excellence and contributes to a respectful workplace. Responsibilities include:

65% Cooking and Coordination

  • Coordinate meal production and prepare foods per menus and recipes
  • Handle food prep tasks like washing, chopping, and cooking using commercial equipment
  • Adjust recipes and plan cooking schedules
  • Communicate with guests about dietary needs

5% Requisitioning

  • Maintain supplies, place orders, verify deliveries

5% Record keeping

  • Document food prep, leftovers, and inventory

10% Cleaning Functions

  • Store food properly, clean equipment and work areas, assist in cleanup

15% Lead Work and Miscellaneous

  • Assign tasks, train staff, monitor equipment, respond to guest feedback, attend meetings

Minimum Requirements

Two years of cooking experience in an institution or commercial setting, or an Associate’s degree in related field.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Food Handler’s card or ability to obtain within 30 days
  • Commitment to a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment

This position is critical/security-sensitive; successful completion of a criminal background check is required. Self-reporting convictions and additional checks for youth program staff are mandated.

  • Decision-making under stress
  • Ability to interpret recipes and deliver quality food
  • Physical ability to work in a busy kitchen environment, including standing for long periods and lifting up to 50 pounds

Working Conditions / Schedule

  • Location in a rural youth camp kitchen
  • Shifts may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends
  • Work involves heat, sharp equipment, and physical activity

Pay

Hourly, from $17.80 to $26.44, with pay period from the 16th to the 15th of the following month. Pay date is the last working day of each month.
