Technical Applications Scientist - Berlin, Germany (Hybrid)

As a Technical Applications Scientist at Illumina, you will provide support to customers and colleagues on Illumina's products, including bead array and Next Generation Sequencing. By joining Illumina as a Technical Support Scientist in Germany, you will collaborate and engage in scientific discussions to enable our clinical customer success across the country.

A background, experience, and passion for bioinformatics would be highly beneficial for this role.

Please note that this role is based in Berlin, Germany. The successful candidate will have the flexibility to travel internally up to 20% to our Europe head office in Cambridge, UK.

Fluent language skills in English and German are essential for this position.

You should come from a bioinformatics and NGS background, be passionate about supporting and advising customers on Illumina products, and have language skills in English and German.

This is a key role as an in-house Support Scientist 2 (Technical Applications Scientist) of Illumina products and applications. The role involves providing support to internal and external customers on all relevant Illumina products. Developing expertise in a workflow will be a key part of the role, often alongside a second specialty. The ability to work independently with high technical knowledge and good teamwork is essential. Compliance with local and global work instructions and maintaining ISO accreditation through good working practices are required.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide phone and email support to customers for incoming questions and outbound communication.
  • Research and resolve routine and complex issues within your specialty workflow and support a second workflow as needed.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse range of internal and external contacts.
  • Handle day-to-day work independently, responding to inquiries, documenting customer interactions in SFDC.
  • Understand technical issues in specific areas to answer complex questions.
  • Develop and maintain networks with internal teams (Field, Product Support, Customer Service) for resolution of escalated customer complaints.
  • Take ownership of key accounts in the region as a TAS representative if necessary.
  • Develop, write, and edit technical documentation and training materials for internal and external customers, such as webinars, bulletins, knowledge bases, and articles.
  • Achieve department metrics and teach processes to others when appropriate.
  • Contribute to the technical growth of colleagues in your specialty.
  • Participate in core product sustaining and development teams.
  • Be self-motivated and proactive, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Participate in ongoing training, including occasional bench training, to maintain proficiency with Illumina's products.
  • Follow all health and safety directions and relevant work instructions.

Requirements:

  • Experience with library preparation or NGS (desirable).
  • Experience in a call center or technical support position.
  • Practical knowledge of bioinformatics, sequencing, or BeadArray, and familiarity with Illumina NGS platforms and tools.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or other CRM systems, including logging, tasking, and escalation procedures.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication and training skills.
  • Experience working in an ISO-accredited institution (desired).

Experience / Education:

  • Typically requires a Ph.D. or M.S. with relevant in-house or field applications experience in molecular biology, genetics, library preparation, NGS, or related fields. B.S. with substantial support experience or equivalent.
