Systems Engineer Subject Matter Expert (SME) Public Sector Regional

A key differentiator in the market is the PreSales organization, which boasts outstanding coverage and security technology competence, well above the average vendor presence in the security industry.

Objective:

In this key role, a Systems Engineer will work closely with a sales representative within a defined district. The main mission of the Systems Engineer is to support the sales organization in all technical matters related to presales activities and some postsales activities.

Responsibilities:

1. Understanding of the Fortinet portfolio with the ability to demonstrate and articulate technical and business value.
2. Having a strong foundational knowledge in security and networking technology, specifically in our core technology FortiOS-based products.
3. Serving as a Subject Matter Expert and first contact within an assigned technical domain in or across the sales district. Managing domain use cases, competitive intelligence, and differentiation. Demonstrating excellent product integration and customization skills, including relevant third-party integrations.
4. Creating sales opportunities by identifying solutions to customer problems, assisting in qualifying sales leads from a technical perspective, and discovering opportunities to upsell and cross-sell Fortinet solutions. Initiating and influencing project decisions.
5. Managing and leading all aspects of technical sales engagements, including general queries, demos, RFx, and PoCs related to features, specifications, functionality, and integration. Providing architecture and implementation design consultations and best practice guidance for strategic opportunities.
6. Acting as a trusted advisor for assigned accounts, maintaining technical relationships, and working closely with regional escalation managers, technical support teams, and engineering to resolve customer technical issues.
7. Collaborating with peers such as Consulting System Engineers (CSEs), Solution Architects, Business Consultants, Professional Services, and Partners on complex opportunities. Capturing and managing customer requirements through the Consulting System Engineering Team to Product Management.
8. Supporting presales sales and channel enablement activities and events.

Required Skills:

• Minimum of 5 years of successful presales support experience.
• Expert-level knowledge in networking (LAN, Wi-Fi, WAN, SDN, routing, switching) and network security (NextGen Firewalls, Intrusion Detection, encryption protocols).

Candidates should have a strong customer focus, addressing complex technical and business requirements with a self-motivated, positive attitude. Ability to adapt to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines is essential.

• Ability to interface effectively with senior levels of internal and external organizations.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, prioritization, and interpersonal skills.
• Deep experience in installation and configuration of network devices and systems (UNIX/Linux, Windows-based virtualized environments, containers), public clouds, and scripting (preferably Ansible, Terraform, Python with good API knowledge).

Knowledge of the following domains is a plus:

• Security Architectures (e.g., Zero Trust, SASE)
• Modern Software Architectures (e.g., DevOps, IaC)
• Cloud Architectures with at least one public cloud specialization
• Security Operations (e.g., Orchestration, Automation, SIEM tools)
• IT Security standards (e.g., BSI 200x, ISO 2700x, COBIT, NIST) and relevant regulations (e.g., EU DSGVO, BDSG, NIS2, KRITIS)

Fluent in German and English. Willingness to travel 20-50% of the time.
