Overview

This position is located in the National Weather Service (NWS), Spaceflight Meteorology Group (SMG) with one vacancy in Houston, TX. SMG provides meteorological support to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Johnson Space Center on a number of different projects including human space exploration, research and commercial space service.

Duties

As a Supervisory Meteorologist, you will perform the following duties:

  • The working title for this position is Meteorologist In Charge (MIC). As MIC you will manage, direct and supervise the ongoing weather warning and forecast services of the Weather Forecast Office (WFO), the hydrologic service program, and other service programs of the WFO.
  • Ensure the application of the latest advances in science and the conduct of analytical studies designed to enhance local forecasting techniques at the mesoscale level, in order to meet local needs.
  • Provide overall administrative management of the office and its personnel.
  • Ensure, maintain, and improve the complex set of interrelationships between the National Weather Service (NWS), the public, government agencies, the media, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and other weather user interests.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: This position has a positive Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of Specialized Experience. Transcripts must be submitted with your application package. You MUST meet the following requirements:

To qualify for the 1340 series:

EDUCATION:

  • A. Degree: Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or other natural science major that included:
    • At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of meteorology/atmospheric science with specific course requirements (atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics; analysis and prediction of weather systems; physical meteorology; remote sensing/instrumentation).
    • Six semester hours of physics with lab; three semester hours of differential equations; additional physical science coursework.
  • OR B. Combination of education and experience: didactic coursework as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. This includes overseeing meteorological/hydrological forecasting or service programs and evaluating scientific/technological advances in an operational weather forecast environment.

For GS-14 level: one full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-13 includes overseeing a meteorological/hydrological forecasting, warning or service program and supporting evaluation of advances in an operational forecast environment.

Education substitutions are not applicable to this vacancy. Foreign education may be used if equivalent to U.S. education and recognized by an accrediting organization.
