For our Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics in Stuttgart we are looking for a

Student mechanical engineering, energy technology, mechatronics, aerospace engineering or similar (f / m / x)

Improvement of a model based temperature control with a thermal capacitor with metal hydrides

What to expect:

The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics at DLR has over 150 employees conducting research in the field of efficient and resource-saving energy storage and energy converters. The Thermal Process Technology department deals with energy storage, heat management and heat transfer.

In a world that wants to counter the effects of climate change, hydrogen and new hydrogen systems are of crucial importance. The thermochemical systems research group focuses on gas-solid reactions for thermal management applications. Thermochemical reactions such as those between metals and hydrogen, which react to form metal hydrides, are also being researched for various applications. A future-oriented and versatile technology is an active bidirectional temperature control using thermochemical reactions such as metal hydrides. Metal hydride-based temperature control can be used in any hydrogen system with a pressure difference for rapid and targeted temperature control, thus saving energy and preventing degradation. A reactor was designed and manufactured at DLR for this purpose. A control system using a PID controller or an internal model controller (IMC) was implemented and tested on the test rig.

In a student project, the control system is now to be further optimized with a model based control and then integrated into the PLC of the test rig. In particular, the problems of batch behavior and the transition between absorption and desorption are to be investigated and potential improvements developed. Once the control system has been improved, bidirectional temperature control with metal hydrides should be investigated using various load cases and its thermal potential determined.

Content of the work:

  • Introduction to the topic of hydrogen-metal hydride systems
  • Introduction to the topic of control engineering
  • Implementing a model based control system in the PLC
  • Modeling / simulation of the thermal capacitor and its control system
  • Experimental investigation of the thermal capacitor

What we expect from you:

  • Engineering student (mechanical engineering, energy technology, mechatronics, aerospace engineering, or comparable courses)
  • Interest in programming and control engineering
  • Experience with Python desirable
  • Ideally an interest in heat transfer and reaction kinetics
  • Conscientious, independent and structured way of working
  • Security clearance as well as the willingness to security clearance pursuant to §§ 8 ff. Security Clearance Act (SÜG) is a condition for employment at DLR.

What we offer:

DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
