The Sr. Medical Affairs Manager will serve as a critical link between our company and the medical community, providing expert medical input as well as building and fostering relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs). The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the successful launch and lifecycle management of our products.
This role will be responsible for developing and ensuring the alignment of medical strategy with business objectives and will drive all internal and external medical affairs activities including medical scientific liaison with key stakeholders. The position reports to the Head of Medical Affairs Germany and Austria.
The ideal candidate will have leadership and strong communication skills, a passion for advancing healthcare, and experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and implement the overall German medical affairs strategic and tactical plan in alignment with local and corporate goals.
- Build strong relationships and collaborate cross functionally with internal colleagues (e.g. Market Access, Marketing, Sales, PV, Regulatory) by providing medical expertise and to ensure alignment on strategic decision including support of AMNOG process.
- Collaborate with regional Medical Affairs colleagues to support regional deliverables (e.g., scientific support, internal/external presentations).
- Monitor competitive activities and emerging trends within relevant therapeutic areas.
- Provide internal onboarding and ongoing medical training for commercial and medical colleagues.
- Support clinical trial operations to ensure success with planned and ongoing clinical trials to include identifying, supporting, and regularly engaging clinical trial investigators, and sites.
- Maintain high level of medical expertise to support the portfolio/pipeline and relevant disease states (e.g., growth and bone).
External engagement & insights
- Create awareness of Ascendis Pharma in the endocrinology community and communicate the potential of TransCon technology to transform the practice of endocrinology.
- Serve as external facing medical representation of Medical Affairs.
- Develop and maintain a KOL engagement plan that fosters collaborative relationships in Switzerland.
- Foster relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs) and key organizations (e.g. professional medical associations) for disease states in Germany and Austria.
- Provide medical/scientific presentations to both internal and external audiences.
- Identify the scientific needs of healthcare providers (HCPs), researchers, and patient advocates important to patient care.
- Capture external insights about the disease state, Ascendis portfolio and pipeline, and competitors and communicate to internal stakeholders in a timely and effective manner.
- Provide scientific support at medical congresses such as participation in clinical data presentations, scientific exchange at the medical affairs booth, and internal or external meetings.
- Engage with external researchers as a primary contact with interest in scientific research projects.
- Document all relevant activities in the CRM platform.
- Ensure understanding of and maintain compliance with department and corporate policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Advanced degree (MD, PharmD, PhD) in a relevant scientific field.
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in medical affairs, with a proven track record within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry incl. field experience.
- Ability to make decisions which have a significant impact on the department’s credibility, operations, and services.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with strong scientific acumen with the ability to communicate complex information effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills and collaborates with a wide range of people to achieve results.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and prioritize one’s own work schedule.
- Endocrinology, pediatric endocrinology and/or rare disease experience preferred.
- Must be outgoing, eager to build and activate networks to interact with healthcare providers and researchers.
- Must have an incredible passion for patients.
- Ability to create materials such as reports and presentations and to present/speak to both internal and external groups.
- Fluent German language skills, both written and verbal.
- Excellent English language skills, both written and verbal.
- Estimated travel ~30-40%.
