Job Description:
Responsible for the design and development of automotive closure structures, such as hoods, fenders, doors, decklids, and liftgates, with a focus on aluminum or composite materials, including hinges and kinematic requirements, from concept to production.
Designing with excellence at both system and component levels, paying close attention to detail to optimize performance, size, weight, durability, and cost.
Collaborating closely with internal teams and external suppliers to integrate multiple systems efficiently using creativity and teamwork.
Engaging with stakeholders across the company, including Vehicle Safety, Dynamics, NVH, Durability, Manufacturing, and Design Studio, to create world-class designs.
Working with CAE teams to interpret analysis results to guide design evolution.
Partnering with manufacturing to ensure efficient processes and build quality.
Coordinating with cross-functional teams on tool buy-offs and secondary component changes, involving Purchasing, Supplier Quality, and Suppliers.
Developing testing plans and coordinating physical tests to validate design concepts and meet performance targets.
Analyzing section properties, materials, and manufacturing processes through benchmarking to ensure design competitiveness.
Managing virtual engineering and physical validation testing activities.
Communicating effectively with suppliers and providing clear direction and negotiation.
Determining tolerances using GD&T principles.
Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution or equivalent automotive closure experience, with 5+ years of expertise in automotive closure systems at OEM or supplier level.
Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as CATIA V5/V6, experience with Class A surface data, and hands-on prototype and production assembly skills.
Strong understanding of system integration, manufacturing processes, analysis tools (ANSYS, OptiStruct, MATLAB, ADAMS), and full lifecycle development from concept to production.
Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize in high-pressure environments.
