A leading company in the automotive sector is looking for a Design Engineer to take responsibility for the design and development of plastic trim parts including Side Door Trims and Hood Trims. This role involves working collaboratively across teams and requires a strong background in mechanical engineering with hands-on experience in automotive design processes. Successful candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree, strong CAD skills, and the ability to manage engineering changes throughout the product lifecycle.

being responsible for the design and development of automotive Closures plastic trim parts and assemblies, such as Side Door Exterior Rocker Trims, Side Door functional plastic parts (glass run channels, close out panels), Hood Trims, Liftgate trims, Spoiler Systems, and owning polymer-related aspects from a blank page into production
designing with excellence at system and component level, with great attention to every detail, creating optimized designs for performance, size, weight, durability, and cost
working closely with both internal teams and external suppliers, using creativity and teamwork to integrate multiple systems in the most efficient way possible
working closely with other stakeholders and attribute owners across the company, such as Vehicle Safety, Vehicle Dynamics, NVH, Durability, Manufacturing, Design Studio, etc., to create world-class designs
collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as CAE, by interpreting and using analysis results to guide and evolve the design
collaborating with manufacturing to ensure efficient process sequences and build quality
working cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Design, and Product Development, as well as with Purchasing, Supplier Quality, Stamping, and Suppliers on items such as tool buy-offs and secondary component changes
creating testing plans and conducting/coordinating physical tests to prove out design concepts and ensure performance targets are being achieved
performing detailed analysis of section properties, materials, and manufacturing processes through benchmarking activities to understand the competitiveness of designs
coordinating virtual engineering and physical validation testing activities for your designs
coordinating and communicating with interfacing suppliers
effectively providing direction to others and negotiating a balanced solution
determining required tolerances using GD&T
traveling domestically and internationally as required
holding a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET-accredited institution, or having equivalent closures automotive experience
bringing 5+ years of expertise in automotive plastic part design, including thermal expansion impacts to part matching gap and flushness, and paint matching at OEM or supplier level
having a solid track record of successful system-level integration
working with Class A surface data
demonstrating proven 3D CAD skills, with proficiency in CATIA V5/V6 or similar software
applying hands-on practical experience in prototype and production assembly, with the willingness to assemble your own parts
contributing expertise in technology, system, and supplier selection
effectively prioritizing and executing tasks in high-pressure environments
maintaining a detail-oriented personality with a determined problem-solving attitude using an Engineering first principles approach
managing design release engineering, including engineering change management and project management
having a strong understanding of various analysis tools such as ANSYS, OptiStruct, MatLab, ADAMS, etc.
demonstrating excellence in your past position while showing creativity in resolving mechanical design problems
having experience in full life cycle development from concept to prototype to full production
understanding material requirements from part specifications and material selection after holistic evaluation of plastic grades
applying knowledge of manufacturing processes for closures plastic parts, such as injection molding, ultrasonic welding, and bonding
