Free knowledge leads to a fairer world. Wikipedia is the most important online knowledge collection of our time. The German Wikipedia alone records almost 1 billion page views per month for a total of 3 million articles. We - Wikimedia Deutschland e. V. - support the volunteers of Wikipedia and its sister projects develop free software such as Wikidata and advocate for free access to knowledge, the opening of education and research, and more common good orientation in data policy.

We are looking for a Software Engineer (all genders) (30-40 hours / week) to join and support one of our agile development teams. This is a permanent contract starting as soon as possible, based at our headquarters in Berlin.

You will work with the team that develops and improves the software behind the Wikidata project. Wikidata is a free and open knowledge graph that can be read and edited by both humans and machines and is part of the Linked Open Data Network. You will develop open source software that prioritizes user needs and increases user satisfaction. Wikidata aims to give more people access to more knowledge, and you will be part of that mission!

Technologies we use:

  • Most server-side code is written in PHP, extending MediaWiki functionality.
  • Version control is managed with Git.
  • We use TypeScript for modern frontends.
  • We are migrating legacy code into these and newer technologies.
  • Testing frameworks and continuous integration are integral to our development process.

Knowledge and experience in these technologies are not mandatory; we believe they can be learned on the job, supported by your team and line manager.

Responsibilities include:

  • Building and maintaining Wikidata functionalities and associated tools, collaborating to find the best solutions for user problems.
  • Participating in all stages of software development, including code design and reviews, providing constructive feedback.
  • Maintaining a good understanding of the product roadmap and team goals.
  • Continuously improving team processes and agile practices.

You are passionate about software:

  • Experience with object-oriented programming (preferably PHP) and web development.
  • An eye for software design and quality, understanding the importance of testing.
  • Enjoy working in a team towards shared goals, learning, and supporting peers.
  • Open to making mistakes, eager to learn and develop.
  • Passionate about Wikimedia's mission, aiming to increase access to free knowledge.
