Job Description

Sompo offers a unique opportunity for a Lead Underwriter in Energy Power Generation within our Property & Energy team for Continental Europe. Our experienced global Energy Team, supported by Sompo's financial strength, provides comprehensive underwriting across the entire energy spectrum—from oil and gas extraction and refining to emerging renewable energy solutions. Operating from different regions, we offer tailored products and significant capacity. The Continental Europe unit has been focusing on Downstream Chemical and is expanding into Power Generation and Renewables. This position reports directly to the Continental Europe Head of Property & Energy.

Location: This role is based in one of our Continental European offices, preferably Paris, Cologne, or Munich.

What you'll be doing:

• Initially focus on underwriting and developing the Power and Utility sub-class portfolio, including Renewables, within Continental Europe, with a focus on Central Europe. This includes operational risks as well as construction (CAR/EAR) risks.
• Conduct thorough underwriting of all accounts in line with guidelines and authority levels.
• Develop and shape underwriting strategies, risk appetite, and technical guidance in collaboration with the CE Head of Property & Energy.
• Provide advice on pricing, product development, and policy language.
• Collaborate with local underwriting and business development teams to support new business within the energy sector.
• Perform referral functions as needed, adhering to authority levels.
• Build strong relationships with regional Energy teams across London, North America, Singapore, and Brazil to ensure consistent underwriting approaches and share market insights.
• Monitor industry and account trends and work with Energy Risk Engineering specialists to enhance underwriting practices.
• Represent Sompo at broker and client meetings, as well as market events.

What you'll bring:

• 7+ years of relevant experience in underwriting operational and CAR/EAR risks for Power and Utilities.
• A Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Civil Engineering degree or equivalent, with specific technical knowledge of global Power Generation and Renewables underwriting.
• Established relationships and understanding of the CE Energy market.
• Experience in developing products and technical underwriting guidance for Power Generation and Renewables.
• Strong interpersonal skills for building long-term client relationships.
• Ability to influence and collaborate with senior stakeholders regionally.
• Excellent analytical skills for complex data from multiple sources.
• Proficiency in English and ideally in German and/or French.
