Job summary

Digital Waffle in Berlin is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to own core services and cloud infrastructure. You will design, develop and evolve scalable Python backends in a predominantly AWS-based environment.

You’ll build serverless APIs with FastAPI/Django/Flask, optimise PostgreSQL and DynamoDB, improve performance, and contribute to CI/CD and testing. You’ll collaborate with frontend, QA, product, UX/UI and AI teams in an agile setup.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional backend development experience.
• Strong commercial experience with Python.
• Hands-on experience building APIs and backend services.
• Experience with frameworks such as FastAPI, Django, Flask or similar.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL.
• Experience with NoSQL technologies such as DynamoDB would be beneficial.
• Good understanding of AWS and cloud-based architecture, particularly serverless technologies.
• Experience with automated testing and modern software development practices.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tooling such as GitHub Actions.
• Experience with modern Python dependency management tools such as Poetry, uvicorn or pip.
• A good understanding of software architecture, design patterns, scalability and performance is a must.
• Experience working within an agile engineering team.

Responsibilities

• Designing, developing and evolving backend services within a cloud-based environment.

• Contributing to the architecture and integration of backend services with other parts of the wider technology ecosystem.

• Taking an active role in an agile development environment and contributing ideas that improve how the team works.

We’re working with an established technology business that is continuing to invest heavily in its engineering capabilities. They’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with strong Python experience to join a collaborative product team and take ownership of important backend services and cloud infrastructure.

This is a hands‑on role for someone who enjoys building robust systems, improving performance and working closely with engineers across the wider product organisation.

The Role

You’ll play a key role in designing, developing and evolving backend services within a predominantly cloud‑based environment.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Designing and developing scalable backend services using Python and AWS

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for an experienced backend engineer who enjoys solving technical problems and wants genuine ownership over the systems they build.

You’ll ideally bring:
