Medical Chemistry team at
Wuppertal in the Bayer Pharmaceuticals division, we are pushing the boundaries of drug discovery to develop innovative therapies for areas with high unmet medical need. As a
Senior Scientist Medicinal Chemistry (all genders), you will play a key role in discovering and developing novel drug candidates, working in a cross-functional and collaborative environment to bring breakthrough science to life.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES- You lead drug discovery projects aimed at identifying pre-clinical and clinical development candidates to address unmet medical needs
- You identify and optimize biologically active compounds for target validation and disease-target linkage in collaboration with chemical biology experts
- You drive lead identification based on hit structures from diverse screening formats, including DEL screens, covalent compound screens, and small molecule libraries
- You collaborate closely with computational chemists to integrate structure-based design into your medicinal chemistry workflows
- You bring your synthetic chemistry expertise into hands-on design and synthesis of target molecules, in close collaboration with project chemists, the automated chemistry team, and external CROs
- You document your experiments with a high standard of analytical rigor (e.g. LC-MS, NMR, MS) and contribute to scale-up efforts for key compounds
- You apply state-of-the-art separation and analytical technologies to ensure compound quality and reproducibility
- You cooperate across research units and functional teams to support candidate profiling, selection, and smooth knowledge transfer into the next development phases
WHO YOU ARE- You hold a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, material science, or a related discipline
- You bring postdoctoral experience or initial industry experience in medicinal or pharmaceutical research projects
- You demonstrate expert knowledge in method development, modern synthetic methods, chemical design, and analytical characterization techniques
- You have experience in chemical biology, biochemistry, or structure-based drug design (SBDD) is considered a strong advantage
- You are a collaborative team player withstrong communication skills and a solution-oriented mindset
- You show a high level of scientific curiosity and are motivated to challenge the status quo in drug discovery
- You are fluent in English, both written and spoken, and show willingness to learn German
