This position reports to:

R&D Team Lead

Key responsibilities

• Initiate, manage, and participate in applied research and technology transfer projects, collaborating with international ABB divisions, product teams, customers, partners, and academic institutions.
• Scout and tailor new technologies related to Industry 4.0, industrial IoT, digital twins, automation systems, and edge architectures.
• Apply skills in software engineering and architecture for industrial systems.
• Build prototypes to validate concepts and communicate work internally and externally, including at scientific conferences.
• Secure intellectual property through patents and publish scientific articles.
• Develop technical and soft skills to advance your career.

Qualifications for the role

• Degree in computer science, software engineering, automation engineering, or related field, with academic (PhD) or professional experience in Industry 4.0 or industrial software engineering/architecture.
• Hands-on experience in software design and development (e.g., C++, .Net, Python, Java).
• Record of publishing research results at conferences and journals.
• Interest in consortia and standardization around Industry 4.0/digital ecosystems.
• German language skills are beneficial.
• Knowledge in edge computing, cloud-native technologies, web tech is beneficial.
• Domain knowledge in process automation or discrete manufacturing is beneficial.
• Knowledge of industrial automation technologies (e.g., Asset Administration Shell, OPC UA, IEC standards) is beneficial.
• Project management experience is beneficial.
