Job summary

Digital Waffle is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer in Berlin to own backend services and cloud infra. You will design, build and evolve scalable Python APIs in a predominantly cloud-based environment.

Bring 5+ years of backend experience, strong Python skills, and a track record with AWS, PostgreSQL and serverless architectures. You’ll work closely with frontend, QA, product and AI specialists in an agile team.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional backend development experience.
• Strong commercial experience with Python.
• Hands-on API and backend services development.
• Experience with FastAPI, Django or Flask.
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL; DynamoDB preferred.
• Good understanding of AWS and serverless architectures.
• Experience with automated testing and modern practices.
• Familiarity with GitHub Actions and CI/CD tooling.
• Knowledge of Python dependency management (Poetry / pip).
• Solid software architecture, design patterns, scalability and performance.

We’re working with an established technology business that is continuing to invest heavily in its engineering capabilities. They’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with strong Python experience to join a collaborative product team and take ownership of important backend services and cloud infrastructure.

This is a hands‑on role for someone who enjoys building robust systems, improving performance and working closely with engineers across the wider product organisation.

The Role

You’ll play a key role in designing, developing and evolving backend services within a predominantly cloud‑based environment.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Designing and developing scalable backend services using Python and AWS
• Building efficient serverless applications and APIs
• Working with technologies such as AWS Lambda, S3 and other AWS services
• Developing and maintaining APIs using frameworks such as FastAPI, Django or Flask
• Designing and optimising data solutions using PostgreSQL, DynamoDB and caching technologies
• Improving application performance, reliability and scalability
• Establishing and improving automated testing, including unit, integration and end‑to‑end testing
• Contributing to CI/CD processes and engineering standards
• Working with modern dependency and package management approaches
• Helping maintain clean, well‑documented and maintainable codebases
• Contributing to the architecture and integration of backend services with other parts of the wider technology ecosystem
• Working closely with frontend engineers, QA, product, UX/UI and AI specialists
• Taking an active role in an agile development environment and contributing ideas that improve how the team works

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for an experienced backend engineer who enjoys solving technical problems and wants genuine ownership over the systems they build.

You’ll ideally bring:

• 5+ years of professional backend development experience
• Strong commercial experience with Python
• Hands‑on experience building APIs and backend services
• Experience with frameworks such as FastAPI, Django, Flask or similar
• Strong knowledge of relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL
• Experience with NoSQL technologies such as DynamoDB would be beneficial
• Good understanding of AWS and cloud‑based architecture, particularly serverless technologies
• Experience with automated testing and modern software development practices
• Familiarity with CI/CD tooling such as GitHub Actions
• Experience with modern Python dependency management tools such as Poetry, uv or pip
• A good understanding of software architecture, design patterns, scalability and performance is a must
• Experience working within an agile engineering team
