Senior Principal Scientist - Drug Substance Process Chemistry (m/f/d) (m/f/d)

You will join the Drug Substance Small Molecules (DSSM) team within the CMC&T unit. Our team offers a broad range of expertise across Process Chemistry, Process Industrialization, Process Technologies & Protein Engineering, Launch and Lifecycle Management. We collaborate closely with our partners in Research and Development, CMC and API manufacturing. Our team is responsible for early and late-stage technical development of our synthetics chemical API pipeline, manufacture of drug substance for clinical studies, and transfer of the processes to manufacturing.

In Process Chemistry, we develop phase-appropriate chemical manufacturing processes for clinical API candidates. While meeting supply demands, our focus is to identify optimal processes with regard to robustness, quality, cost, safety and sustainability. To achieve this goal, we leverage state-of-the-art synthesis know-how in combination with automation and data science.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • You are responsible for the development and optimization of assigned chemical processes generating benefits in yield, quality and cost. The scope includes small molecules as well as synthetic modalities such as protein conjugates or peptides
  • You contribute as part of project teams to process transfers from laboratories to the relevant production plant or site (scale up) internally and/or externally
  • You ensure competitiveness of production processes by evaluating and applying new and state-of-the-art chemical technologies and methods
  • You provide scientific input and guidance to laboratory teams always ensuring compliance with safety regulations
  • You develop and maintain comprehensive documentation of experimental procedures, results, and protocols
  • You stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in process chemistry and technologies and take ownership for implementing new technologies and methods
  • You drive excellence in synthetic chemistry within Drug Substance Small Molecules and across the Bayer-wide chemistry community
  • You present findings and progress updates to internal stakeholders and at external conferences and workshops
  • You co-shape way of working within Process Chemistry cluster, embracing our Dynamic Shared Ownership operating model
WHO YOU ARE
  • You hold a PhD in organic chemistry or related discipline and have extensive expertise in industrial process chemistry and chemical API development
  • You have strong project management skills including generation of vision and outcomes, tracking of progress and stakeholder management
  • You have strong interpersonal and influencing skills, with demonstrated ability to build trustful relationships and motivate team members
  • You have excellent presentation and communication skills, including the ability to communicate across multiple levels within and outside the organization
  • Excellent knowledge of classical and modern synthetic methods, knowledge of modern tools in digital chemistry and automation is a plus
  • Demonstrated high level of creativity and independence in solving complex scientific problems by designing, executing, and evaluating solution-oriented chemical experiments
  • You are fluent in German and English, both verbal and written
