Job summary

Mackinnon Bruce International is seeking a Senior R&D Engineer – Optical Fiber Interconnects to own the technical direction of a specialist area. You will oversee fiber interconnect handling, processing, alignment and fixation, and collaborate with R&D leadership to shape development roadmaps.

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optics, Photonics, or related field.
• At least 3 years’ relevant experience in mechanical engineering.
• Strong knowledge of optics and fiber technology.
• Experience leading engineers in a technical environment.
• German and English professional proficiency (B2+).

Are you an experienced optics or fiber technology professional ready to take technical ownership of a specialist engineering area?

We’re supporting an innovative semiconductor equipment technology business in its search for a Senior R&D Engineer – Optical Fiber Interconnects to drive technical development, guide engineering teams and shape the future of fiber interconnect technology.

This is an opportunity to combine hands‑on technical expertise with technical leadership, project ownership and technology roadmap development.

The Role

You will be the technical point of contact for fiber interconnects, overseeing the handling, processing, alignment and fixing of optical fibers. Working closely with R&D leadership and cross-functional teams, you’ll drive technical strategy, support complex projects and contribute to the development of next‑generation technologies. Eventually this person will be the Technical Domain Lead.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and guidance to engineers, coordinating activities, delegating tasks and supporting problem‑solving.
• Lead the development of fiber interconnect technologies, including optical fiber handling, processing, alignment and fixation.
• Manage internal, customer‑specific and publicly funded R&D projects, overseeing timelines, resources and technical deliverables.
• Plan, establish and evaluate laboratory experiments independently.
• Develop technology roadmaps in collaboration with R&D, Sales and Business Development.
• Present technical results to customers, partners and industry audiences.
• Contribute to the continued technical and organisational development of the R&D department.

What We’re Looking For

• A Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Optics, Photonics or a related technical discipline.
• At least 3 years’ relevant professional experience in mechanical engineering, ideally within special‑purpose machinery or advanced manufacturing equipment.
• Strong technical knowledge of optics, fiber technology and fiber alignment.
• Experience guiding or leading engineers in a technical environment.
• A structured, hands‑on approach to problem‑solving, with strong attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Professional proficiency in both German and English, ideally B2 level or above.
