Job summary

Innolume GmbH in Dortmund is seeking an experienced Optical Packaging Engineer (m/f/d) to own and optimize optical assembly and packaging processes for photonic semiconductor devices.

You will work hands-on with lensed fibers, collimators, FAC and SAC lenses and micro-optics, transfer processes to production, and collaborate with Production, R&D and Quality to ensure robust, scalable solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's in photonics, optical engineering, or a related field.
• Hands-on experience with optical alignment, coupling and assembly technologies.
• Fluent English written and spoken.

Responsibilities

• Own optical assembly and packaging processes from concept to production.
• Work hands-on with lensed fibers, collimators and micro-optics in packaging.
• Apply SPC/DoE methods to improve process capability and yield.
• Collaborate with Production, R&D, Quality and other engineering teams.
• Prepare technical documentation and train production teams on new processes.

Job description

Your mission

• Develop and optimize optical assembly and packaging processes for photonic semiconductor devices
• Take technical ownership of assembly equipment, tooling and related measurement processes
• Work hands-on with lensed fibers, collimators, FAC and SAC lenses and other optical components
• Develop and implement advanced optical coupling and thermal management concepts
• Optimize bonding processes, including epoxy and eutectic bonding
• Apply structured experimentation and statistical process control (SPC) to improve process capability, quality and yield
• Transfer new processes and technologies from development into stable production
• Analyze technical failures, troubleshoot complex process and equipment issues and implement sustainable solutions
• Collaborate closely with Production, R&D, Quality and other engineering teams
• Prepare technical and process documentation, including development plans, engineering reports, SOPs and work instructions
• Train and support production teams on new equipment and processes
• Support engineering changes, deviation processes and continuous improvement initiatives
• Ensure compliance with applicable EHS requirements and company standards

Your profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Photonics, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Microsystems Engineering or a related technical field
• Professional experience in optical or electro-optical packaging, assembly or process engineering
• Hands-on experience with optical alignment, coupling and assembly technologies
• Experience with laser sources, photodetectors and optical components such as lensed fibers, collimators or micro-optics
• Experience with advanced assembly equipment and automated motion or positioning systems
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Ability to independently manage technical projects while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams
• Fluent English language skills, both written and spoken

Nice to have

• Experience with semiconductor back-end or photonic device manufacturing
• Experience with wire bonding, die bonding, epoxy bonding or eutectic bonding
• Knowledge of SPC, Design of Experiments (DoE) and statistical data analysis
• Programming experience with Python and/or LabVIEW
• Experience with 3D CAD and technical drawings, preferably SolidWorks
• Experience transferring engineering processes into volume production
• German language skills are an advantage
