Retarus is seeking a Senior IT Service Engineer (m/f/d) to lead the operation of our email-based services, including secure email gateway, encryption, and transactional mail.

In this role you will troubleshoot SMTP/DNS/TLS, coordinate incident response, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with engineering and infrastructure teams to implement service improvements. Fluent English required; German or French a plus.

Qualifikationen

• Strong knowledge of email protocols, DNS, networking, and IT security in production environments.
• Experience handling customer escalations and production incidents with structured troubleshooting.
• Hands-on experience with monitoring, ticketing, incident management, log analysis, and scripting (Bash/Python).
• Customer-focused, hands-on mindset with strong problem-solving and communication skills.
• Fluent English (C1); German or French (B2+) is a plus; additional languages welcome.
• Nice-to-have: configuration management tools (Salt, Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
• Nice-to-have: monitoring/observability tools (Checkmk, Prometheus, Grafana, Loki).
• Nice-to-have: containerized environments and orchestration with Docker and Kubernetes.

What you'll do

As Lead or Senior IT Service Engineer, you will play a key technical role in the operation of our email based services and act as a trusted technical point of contact for our customers. You will ensure reliable and efficient operation, and continuous improvement of our secure email gateway, email encryption and transactional mail services.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support, investigate, and troubleshoot issues involving SMTP, DNS, TLS, authentication, filtering, and networking in a Linux-based environment
• Handle complex customer cases and act as a senior escalation point
• Coordinate incident response, communication, and resolution
• Work with engineering and infrastructure teams on root-cause analysis and service improvements
• Create technical documentation and mentor junior staff

What you'll need

• Strong knowledge of email protocols, DNS, networking, and IT security, combined with practical experience in production environments
• Experience handling customer escalations and production incidents, including structured troubleshooting and incident resolution
• Hands-on experience with monitoring, ticketing, and incident management tools as well as log analysis and automation using Bash, Python, or comparable scripting languages
• A customer-focused and hands-on mindset, strong problem-solving skills, and excellent communication skills
• Fluent English (C1); German or French at B2 level or above is a plus, as are additional languages such as Spanish or Italian
• Nice to have: experience with configuration management and automation tools such as Salt, Ansible, Puppet, or Chef
• Nice to have: experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Checkmk, Prometheus, Grafana, or Loki
• Nice to have: experience with containerized environments and orchestration, particularly Docker and Kubernetes
