Job Description

The Senior IP Counsel (Biochemical Assays, Dyes, Reagents, and Imaging Technologies) develops and implements an IP strategy for our portfolio in these areas. Responsibilities include preparing (mainly with outside counsel), maintaining, defending, and enforcing intellectual property rights for the Life Science Research Division. The role impacts the organization by participating in product definition, conducting due diligence for acquisitions, and defending against third-party IP challenges.

This position reports to the Chief IP Counsel, is part of the IP department located in Wetzlar or Mannheim, and is an on-site role.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a comprehensive IP strategy for the division.
• Prepare (mainly with outside counsel), maintain, and enforce patents in assays, dyes, reagents, and imaging technologies.
• Provide strategic input during product development.
• Conduct competitive intelligence to inform IP strategy and product development.
• Lead due diligence during acquisitions.
• Defend against third-party IP challenges.
• Negotiate, draft, and review IP-related agreements.

Minimum Requirements

• Qualification as National and European Patent Attorney; US patent attorney preferred.
• Advanced degree in biochemistry or related field; PhD preferred but not required.
• Strong IP experience, including prosecuting patents in Europe and the US.
• Advanced English speaking and writing skills.
• Experience with US patent disputes in the relevant field.
• Experience in developing IP strategies in the life sciences sector.

Additional Information

Ability to travel up to 15%, including overnight stays.

Preferred experience in drafting and negotiating IP agreements, conducting due diligence for M&A, and working in a matrixed organization.
