Role Overview:

The Senior IP Counsel (Biochemical Assays, Dyes, Reagents, and Imaging Technologies) develops and implements IP strategies for our portfolio. Responsibilities include preparing (mainly with outside counsel), maintaining, defending, and enforcing IP rights within the Life Science Research Division. The role influences product development through competitive intelligence and conducts due diligence during acquisitions to enhance market position and defend against third-party challenges.

This position reports to the Chief IP Counsel, is part of the IP department located in Wetzlar or Mannheim, and is an on-site role.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute comprehensive IP strategies for the division.
  • Prepare, maintain, and enforce patents in assays, dyes, reagents, and imaging technologies, primarily with outside counsel.
  • Provide strategic input during product development.
  • Conduct competitive intelligence to inform IP and product strategies.
  • Lead due diligence during acquisitions.
  • Defend against third-party IP challenges.
  • Negotiate and review IP-related agreements, including licenses and collaborations.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Qualification as a National and European Patent Attorney; US patent attorney qualification is a plus.
  • Advanced degree in biochemistry or related field; PhD preferred but not required.
  • Strong IP experience, including prosecuting patents in Europe and the US.
  • Advanced proficiency in English.
  • Experience with US patent disputes and developing IP strategies in life sciences.
Additional Information:

Willingness to travel up to 15%, including overnight stays.

Preferred experience in drafting and negotiating IP agreements, conducting due diligence for M&A, and working in matrixed organizations.
