Senior Expert - Environmental & Social Management (m / f / d)

Key Responsibilities
  • Support Finance in Motion’s investment teams to execute the company’s approach to environmental and social (E&S) risk management throughout the investment cycle by: E&S screening of prospective investments against the funds’ E&S eligibility criteria and E&S risk appetite guidelines; planning and performance of in-depth E&S due diligence (including selection and management of external consultants as needed); negotiation of value-adding E&S action plans where appropriate; writing E&S memoranda to support investment proposals and advising investment decision makers; monitoring and reporting on the ongoing E&S performance of individual investees and overall fund portfolios.
  • Contribute to and where necessary, lead the continuous improvement of the Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS) of the funds managed or advised by Finance in Motion, based on lessons of experience and external developments in good practice, policy and regulation.
  • Build and implement ESG frameworks for new fund mandates
  • Contribute to technical and policy-level discussions on impact and sustainability issues and fund results with internal and external stakeholders, including input to investor relations presentations, reports and regulatory disclosures
  • Support strategic discussions, lead research on selected topics and contribute to further shaping Finance in Motion’s impact and sustainability approach, capabilities, and track record
What we expect
  • University degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, economics, development finance or a related field
  • Professional experience in E&S auditing, ESIA, E&S risk management and similar work in either the consulting, investment or development finance sectors and familiarity in one of the following asset classes: project finance, corporate lending, green bonds and investment via banks or other local financial institutions.
  • In-depth knowledge of international E&S norms (especially IFC Performance Standards) and ideally familiarity with the E&S policies and procedures of development finance institutions such as IFC, EBRD, EIB, due diligence and materiality frameworks.
  • Specialist technical expertise in one or more of the following subjects: supply chains, human rights, labor standards, biodiversity, climate change, circular economy, and diversity, and inclusion.
  • Ideally familiarity with the technical screening criteria of the EU Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance and the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail combined with the ability to draw actionable conclusions and pragmatic recommendations for decision-makers
  • Open, engaging and persuasive communication style, strong writing and presentation skills and problem solving / negotiating experience
  • Excellent English language skills; knowledge of other languages of Finance in Motion’s countries of operation is considered a plus, specifically French, Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic.
