The Role: How you'll make an impact at Personio

This position is based in Munich, Berlin, London or Dublin. Office-based with a hybrid working policy.

We’re looking for experienced Software Engineers to join our Product & Technology department, who will play an active role in shaping our engineering culture and the future of HR teams across Europe.

Our PHP Developer Experience team is part of our Developer Experience (DX) tribe. Within DX, we enable engineers to build, test, and deploy code efficiently and reliably. We focus on maximizing engineering efficiency by developing robust development tools, building scalable DevOps processes, and promoting best practices. Your focus will be to create tooling solutions that reduce complexity and risk in software development, deployment, and release.

The Senior Engineering Manager is a crucial, cross-functional role supporting our engineering teams throughout the development lifecycle. You will help teams leverage the platform effectively while minimizing cognitive load.

Role Responsibilities: What you'll do

  • Research, engineer, and experiment with new ways to enhance developer satisfaction and velocity through effective tooling and process improvements.
  • Build relationships with product teams to support platform migrations, understanding their challenges to develop targeted solutions.
  • Lead technically by establishing best practices for managing technical debt, refactoring, design patterns, code review, and pair programming.
  • Drive platform improvements with innovative ideas to maintain quality, security, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with other engineering managers, sharing technical updates and ensuring iterative, impactful results that foster a culture of experimentation and continuous delivery.

Role Requirements: What you need to succeed

  • 5+ years of management experience leading high-performing teams and learning from challenges.
  • Strong leadership skills that motivate and inspire engineers.
  • Decision-making ability to handle ambiguous problems and define strategic directions.
  • Expertise with PHP codebases, ideally Laravel, including build ecosystems.
  • Proven ability to design, build, document, and distribute developer tools and services.
  • Opinionated about development processes and eager to optimize and automate workflows.
  • Experience working with developer-facing tools and creating technical documentation and tutorials.
  • Data-driven mindset, using metrics to inform engineering decisions.
  • Excellent written and spoken English (CEFR level C1/C2).
  • Openness to feedback and continuous learning.
