Permanent employee,Full-time· Germany, Munich (HQ)
About the role
We are seeking a Senior AI/ML Research Engineer to shape the next generation of intelligent robotic systems that combine perception , reasoning, and control. In this role, you will develop deep learning, reinforcement learning, and multi-modal foundation models — from LLMs and VLMs to Vision-Language-Action (VLA) systems — and bring them to life in robotic contexts.
You will bridge the gap between cutting-edge AI research and high-performance engineering , ensuring that models trained on vast data and complex architectures can act effectively in the real world. If you thrive at the intersection of AI, robotics, and software architecture , and you’re passionate about building robots that understand, reason, and act intelligently, this role is for you.
Your Responsibilities
- Multi-Modal AI fo r Robotics Design and train foundation models that integrate vision, language, and actions for embodied intelligence. Adapt LLMs and VLMs for robotic control, planning, and interactive behavior — enabling robots to perceive, reason, and respond in natural, context-aware ways.
- Control and Manipulation Intelligence Develop AI-driven control policies for robotic manipulation, grasping, and motion planning. Combine reinforcement learning , imitation learning , and foundation model prompting to enable generalizable, transferable robotic behaviors.
- Optimization
Implement efficient distributed training, parallelization, and hardware-aware optimizations (GPU/TPU).
- Software Engineering & System Integration Design modular, maintainable, and high-performance AI data processing, training and inference pipelines that can work at scale on large and diverse data. Ability to work across the full stack– taking ideas together with the team, from research and prototyping all the way to the final product.
- Evaluation, Benchmarking, and Experimentation Establish reproducible pipelines for training, evaluation, and deployment. Develop benchmarking frameworks to assess model generalization, safety, and task success.
- Technology Innovation Stay ahead of the latest advancements in AI, multi-modal learning, and robotics by innovating with new ideas and novel approaches. Translate academic breakthroughs into production-ready systems and contribute to papers, patents, or open-source initiatives.
- MSc (and 6+ years of industry experience) or PhD (and 2+ years of industry experience; or combined equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, AI, or related field
- Strong knowledge of machine learning , deep learning , and optimization
- Hands-on experience with transformer-based architectures , including LLMs , VLMs , and multi-modal models
- Stron g expertis e in Python and proficiency in C++
- Experience with PyTorch (and/or TensorFlow,JAX) and distribut ed tra iningframeworks
- Solid software engineering foundation — architecture design, clean code, testing, and CI/CD
- Strong understanding of mathematics, statistics, and numerical optimization
- Excellent analytical problem-solving skills and ability to translate research into robust implementations
- Experience working in Linux environments and with containerization (Docker/Kubernetes)
- High curiosityand motivation to solve challenging tasks, deliver on time, andshape the forefront of robotics and AI.
Beneficial Skills
- Familiarity with controltheory and robotic middleware (ROS2, MoveIt, Gazebo, Isaac Sim)
- Experience with reinforcement learning , imitation learning, or embodied foundation models
- Familiarity with VLA frameworks , robotic reasoning with LLMs , or multi-agent learning
- Knowledge of CUDA , Tensor RT , or hardware acceleration for real-time inference
- Experience with distributed training , simulation frameworks , and data-centric AI pipelines
- Understanding of multi-modal fusion (e.g., vision, speech, tactile sensing)
- Contributions to academic publications , patents , or open-source projects in AI or robotics
