Jobbeschreibung
Overview

We are recruiting experienced Scientific Multi-Mission Validation Engineers to be part of our team that will contribute to EUMETSAT’s activities dedicated to the validation of atmospheric composition products, in Darmstadt, Germany.

Your support shall leverage existing and acquired scientific knowledge on ground-based measurements, as well as knowledge on retrievals, relevant for the provision of fiducial reference measurements for the EUMETSAT atmospheric composition products.

The activities are associated to Copernicus service to provide Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRMs) covering urban areas within the Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean region. This region is of importance to assess the impact on urban air quality of biomass burning smoke and Saharan dust. This is crucial for the Cal/Val activities of the Copernicus products and missions related to air quality and operated by EUMETSAT, principally the Sentinel-3, -4, -5 and CO2M atmospheric products.

Your support will focus on the provision of reliable trace gases (e.g. O3, NO2, CH4, CO, SO2, CO2) and aerosol data in FRMs from urban supersites, i.e. providing remote sensing (e.g. LIDAR and passive spectrometers) combined with in situ measurements and covering the satellite spatial coverage.

Responsibilities

The activities of the service are as follows:

  1. Preparation of S4-S5-CO2M validation based on S3, GOME-2, IASI and Microcarb proof-of-concept:
  • Prepare and validate the S4, S5, and CO2M missions using ground based air quality data from urban areas, integrating them into EUMETSAT’s Cal/Val activities.
  • Validate atmospheric trace gases (e.g., O3, NO2, CH4, CO, SO2, CO2, HCHO) and aerosol parameters, utilizing data from EUMETSAT’s Atmospheric Composition missions.
  • Contribute to the planning, preparation, and long-term adaptation of validation tools, and demonstrate proof-of-concept for S4-S5-CO2M validation using existing S3, GOME-2, IASI, and MicroCarb data.
  1. Retrieval consolidation to support S4-S5-CO2M validation:
  • Provide continuous support for ground-based measurements (e.g. data access point and data preparation tools) at multiplatform urban sites, consolidating retrievals to meet performance requirements and ensure a consistent list of operational Level-2 data at each site.
Synergy product considering the other ground-based instruments:
  • Develop synergistic processing algorithms that fully utilize the presence of other instruments at multi-platform sites.
    Modelling:
  • Propose a chemical transport model to provide high-resolution analysis of gaseous components, supporting observation collection between sites and satellites, and GEO-LEO collocation for S4-S5 cross-validation. Assess retrieval product quality during aerosol events (e.g., Saharan dust, biomass smoke) and incorporate backward trajectory modelling for proposed sites.
    Support long-term validation of S4, S5 and CO2M:
  • Provide ongoing support for the long-term validation of S4, S5, and CO2M, including maintenance, development, testing, and implementation of instrument evolution tasks to meet EUMETSAT’s validation requirements.

The Copernicus scientific support shall contribute to EUMETSAT atmospheric composition Cal/Val activities.

Qualifications & Competencies

We are seeking candidates who can match as many of the following skills as possible:

  • A university degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline is required.
  • Fluency in English;
  • Knowledge on the retrieval of atmospheric parameters
  • Experience in scientific analysis, especially on remote sensing of atmosphere
  • Broad range of skills associated with product science, ground-based measurement, and scientific software development
  • Long-term and proven experiences in the ground–based retrieval of atmospheric parameters as well as remote sensing data from satellite
  • Significant experience with the development, and maintenance of an operations of ground based (remote sensing) instruments, facilities and instrument networks as used in satellite product Cal/Val
  • Excellent knowledge of radiative transfer in the atmosphere and atmospheric products
  • Advanced knowledge on the retrieval of atmospheric parameters as well as instrumental retrieval error sources
  • Experience with the development of modular, clearly readable and adaptable scientific software is required, including the configuration control of the developed codes
  • Communication skills, especially through scientific peer-review papers, international working groups and workshops related to the retrieval of atmospheric parameters
  • Excellent skills in writing and editing of scientific and technical documentation
