Place of work : Braunschweig

Probationary period : 6 months

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) is looking for a new member of staff to join the newly established Digital Office department as soon as possible.

Consultant for Scientific Computing and IT Infrastructure (m / f / d)

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, based in Braunschweig, is a member of the Helmholtz Association and conducts cutting-edge research in the field of infectious diseases. Our scientists develop novel methods and strategies to fight infectious diseases faster and more effectively. Our common goal is to develop novel approaches for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. Our research focuses on bacterial and viral pathogens, their interaction with the human immune system and new effective agents and vaccines.

The digital transformation has become a central challenge both in science at the HZI and in administration. The rapid technological development is revolutionizing the way life science research is conducted and how we administratively organize a research center.

The newly founded Digital Office provides the framework for this. We develop, implement and advise on digitalization innovations and processes. Our aim is to enable all employees to experience the great opportunities and possibilities of digitalization for new insights and better work results.

This includes above all the coordination of HZI Digital Health activities, as well as the creation and implementation of the fields of the scientific digitalization strategy and the implementation of the administrative digitalization strategy.

For this task, we are looking for innovative minds with a passion for learning and design. Our department creates a modern and flexible working environment, which must be shaped by your own expertise and experience, leaving room for your own growth. The task grows with you and you with the task.

These tasks await you :

The core task of the Digital Office is to jointly position the HZI for the data-driven research of the future. Data scientists in particular are dependent on a high-performance and scalable infrastructure. You help to design and shape it by

  • keeping an eye on the latest solutions and recognizing relevant trends
  • Analyze and determine the research processes, systems used and the resulting infrastructural requirements
  • keep a constant eye on high-performance computing in particular, optimize it for new methods and modernize it
  • also include other technology trends such as cloud computing and AI in the considerations
  • Establish suitable exchange formats and committees for decision-making
  • Not only plan strategies, but also implement them independently in projects

In addition to this technically very demanding area of responsibility, there is also the opportunity to deputize for the Digital Office and the CDO.

The following qualifications will help you to fulfill the tasks :

  • Completed university degree in computer science or a similar field of study
  • Experience in developing IT strategies for scientific institutions with a focus on data science
  • Sound knowledge of high-performance computing, method development and application of modern IT infrastructures for complex simulations and data analysis
  • Knowledge of cloud computing, AI applications on HPC infrastructure and management / backup systems
  • The ability to recognize and evaluate technological trends and transfer them to your own organization
  • Experience in setting up and moderating exchange formats and committees for decision-making
  • Initial management experience as a team or department head
  • Very good communication skills in German and English, both written and verbal
  • Willingness to acquire missing knowledge

We offer :

  • An attractive and varied job in a future-oriented research institute with an international environment at the Science Campus South in Braunschweig
  • A state-of-the-art infrastructure and the latest technologies
  • Flexible working hours, part-time models and home office
  • A corporate culture of appreciation and promotion of equal opportunities
  • Extensive training and further education opportunities to develop professional knowledge and personal skills
  • A family office to support family and career, as well as offers for improved childcare, e.g. also during the vacations
  • Interesting additional benefits from the public sector
  • Possibility of an employer subsidy for a job ticket

In the case of equal professional suitability, severely disabled persons are given preference. In order to protect your rights, we ask you to provide us with a clearly recognizable reference to the existence of a severe disability in your cover letter or CV.

The HZI is committed to equality, diversity and integration. It strives for professional equality between women and men. The position is part-time.
