The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an award-winning, independent global non-profit research organization dedicated to designing and implementing policies that address the impacts of the global transportation sector on climate change and public health. We provide high-quality, data-driven research to public officials, as well as to civil society and industry. Our mission-driven and diverse workplace values intelligence, flexibility, transparency, and good humor.

We are excited to announce an immediate opening for a highly motivated Fellow, to support the work of our heavy-duty vehicle teams in Europe for one year. The position will contribute to ICCT’s efforts to enable an accelerated transition to zero-emission vehicles and meet Europe’s climate targets. The successful candidate will support the European team’s work on supply side regulations, including work to improve Europe’s heavy-duty CO2 performance standards, tracking the pace of the zero-emission heavy-duty market, and assessing manufacturer compliance with supply side regulations.

The position offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of technical research and policymaking. You will contribute to rigorous research and modeling and assist in deriving concrete policy recommendations to accelerate the decarbonization of road transport in Europe.

We seek candidates with strong research skills, excellent written and verbal communication abilities in English, and the ability to translate technical insights into actionable policy recommendations. We value a demonstrated interest in addressing global climate challenges and advancing the electrification of transport. Knowledge of the heavy-duty vehicle market and zero-emission technologies is an advantage, but not a necessity.

Position Level:

  • Fellow

You will:

  • Conduct research into heavy-duty vehicle CO2 standards and support work to forecast the climate impact of changes in policy through modeling and quantitative analysis.
  • Monitor and analyze the developments in the electric vehicle market for heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Contribute to ICCT’s policy recommendations on improving the existing CO2 standards for heavy-duty vehicles.

You have:

  • A bachelor’s or master's degree in environmental science, engineering, power systems, environmental policy or related discipline.
  • An interest in vehicle technology (electric and combustion engine), supply side regulations, and climate policy.
  • Robust quantitative, analytical, and research skills.
  • Strong and demonstrated programming skills, preferably through Python.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in other European languages is a plus.

What we offer:

This position is based in Berlin. It is a full-time position, offering an annual salary of at least 37,303 EUR (40 hours/week). The ICCT provides an excellent benefits package including hybrid/remote work flexibilities, transportation subsidies, professional development opportunities, and other benefits. Employment as a Research Fellow is for one year, with a strong focus on learning hands-on about the research and outreach methodologies of ICCT and thereby acquiring valuable skills for future employment opportunities within ICCT or other organizations.

Application:

To apply, please submit a resume (please refrain from submitting a photograph) and a cover letter indicating your interest. Please include your ideal start date. The position will remain open until filled.

If available, please submit two writing samples or relevant technical research publications primarily written by the applicant (in English), and the names and contact information of two professionals or academic references and/or any reference letters available.
