Job Description:

TUD Dresden University of Technology, as a University of Excellence, is one of the leading and most dynamic research institutions in Germany. Founded in 1828, today it is a globally oriented, regionally anchored top university as it focuses on the grand challenges of the 21st century. It develops innovative solutions for the world's most pressing issues. In research and academic programs, the university unites the natural and engineering sciences with the humanities, social sciences and medicine. This wide range of disciplines is a special feature, facilitating interdisciplinarity and transfer of science to society. As a modern employer, it offers attractive working conditions to all employees in teaching, research, technology and administration. The goal is to promote and develop their individual abilities while empowering everyone to reach their full potential. TUD embodies a university culture that is characterized by cosmopolitanism, mutual appreciation, thriving innovation and active participation. For TUD, diversity is an essential feature and a quality criterion of an excellent university. Accordingly, we welcome all applicants who would like to commit themselves, their achievements and productivity to the success of the whole institution.

At the Faculty of Chemistry and Food Chemistry, the Chair of Theoretical Chemistry offers, subject to the availability of resources, two positions as Research Associate / PhD Student / Postdoc (m/w/d) (subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L). The positions are available to start as soon as possible. The PhD Student position entails 65% of full-time hours and is limited to 3 years. The Postdoc positions are full-time and limited to 2 years. Employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). These roles offer the opportunity to pursue further academic qualifications, typically a PhD.

Tasks: The project aims to develop and employ density-functional based and data-driven methods for designing (i) novel ionic high-entropy and (ii) two-dimensional compounds. The successful candidates will utilize ab initio and machine learning techniques for thermodynamic and electronic analysis. Developing a universal data-driven method to improve the predictive power of thermodynamic stability descriptions in ionic systems like oxides is a key goal. The work involves collaboration with local and international partners, requiring strong communication and networking skills.

Requirements: A university degree (M. Sc. or equivalent) and, if applicable, a PhD in chemistry, physics or theoretical/computational materials science, with strong knowledge in computational and theoretical physics/chemistry. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential, as well as proficiency in scripting and programming (C++, Python). Skills in machine learning, high-performance computing, solid-state physics/chemistry, materials thermodynamics, 2D compounds, and density-functional theory (VASP, Quantum Espresso) are advantageous.

What we offer: A position with a competitive salary in Germany's vibrant research environment. TU Dresden offers excellent research, networking, and development opportunities. The positions are within the Dresden-concept Research Group “Autonomous Materials Thermodynamics” led by Dr. Rico Friedrich, with strong ties to local experimental groups and the DRESDEN-concept network. Dresden offers a high standard of living, with a rich cultural heritage and quality healthcare.

TUD encourages applications from women, persons with disabilities, and candidates from diverse backgrounds. We support family-friendly policies and dual career services.

Please submit your application, including a motivation letter, CV with publications, academic certificates, and contact details of two references, by July 9, 2024. Applications should be sent as a single PDF via the TUD SecureMail Portal or by mail to TU Dresden, Faculty of Chemistry and Food Chemistry, Chair of Theoretical Chemistry, Dr. Rico Friedrich, Helmholtzstr. 10, 01069 Dresden, Germany. Only copies are required; applications will not be returned. Interview travel expenses are not reimbursed.

Data protection: Details on data processing and your rights are available on the university website.
