X4 Engineering in Germany seeks a Regulatory & Technical Expert for Food Contact Materials (Chemist) to own chemical testing and regulatory assessment for FCM across Europe and international markets. You will evaluate results, write reports and expert opinions, and advise clients on what FCM legislation means for their products worldwide.

• Completed State Examination in Food Chemistry or degree in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering.
• Experience in chemical testing and legal assessment of FCM.
• Solid knowledge of EU FCM legislation (EC 1935/2004, 2023/2006 GMP, EU 10/2011).
• Knowledge of international FCM requirements (FDA, GB, Japan, Korea, Canada, Mercosur).
• Fluent German and English, strong communication and client advisory skills.

The role

You’ll take ownership of chemical testing and regulatory assessment for food contact materials (FCM), covering both the European market and international target markets. You’ll evaluate results, write reports and expert opinions, and advise clients directly on what FCM legislation means for their products globally.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare test plans for the chemical testing of food contact materials (FCM) for the European and international market.
• Evaluate analytical results and produce test reports and expert opinions.
• Carry out conformity assessments for food contact materials and food contact articles.
• Produce regulatory assessments and risk evaluations for the European target market and for global requirements.
• Advise clients on legal requirements for food contact materials across Europe and international markets.
• Review Declarations of Compliance, test reports and technical documentation.
• Support the development of testing strategies for global market access.
• Provide technical support to sales, project management, laboratories and international client projects.
• Prepare cost and effort estimates in coordination with internal business units, labs and external clients.

What you’ll bring

• A completed State Examination in Food Chemistry, or a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a comparable scientific field.
• Experience in the chemical testing and legal assessment of food contact materials and food contact articles.
• Solid knowledge of European FCM legislation, e.g. Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 (GMP) and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011.
• Solid knowledge of international FCM requirements, e.g. for the US (FDA 21 CFR), China (GB Standards), Japan, Korea, Canada, Mercosur and other target markets.
• Experience advising manufacturers, importers or distributors of food contact materials on global regulatory matters.
• Understanding of analytical test methods such as overall migration, specific migration, NIAS assessments and material characterisation.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills, with a high level of customer focus.
• An independent, structured and reliable way of working.
• Fluent German and English, spoken and written.
• Confident with MS Office.

Nice to have: knowledge of related chemical/packaging requirements such as REACH, POP or PPWR; experience in international project management and working with labs or global expert networks.
