Overview

The Editor-in-Chief of Roentgen Ray Review (R3) is responsible for ensuring the overall quality, relevance, and integrity of the journal’s scholarly content. This includes overseeing a rigorous, fair, and efficient peer review process, while upholding the mission and editorial scope of R3.

The Editor-in-Chief leads the recruitment and appointment of associate editors, editorial board members, and peer reviewers, and provides strategic direction for the journal’s editorial priorities. As chair of the editorial board, the Editor-in-Chief facilitates regular meetings to assess progress, gather feedback, and align on goals.

Additionally, the Editor-in-Chief prepares biannual reports for the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) Executive Council summarizing editorial performance and key developments.

Specific Responsibilities:

Mission, Scope, and Strategy

  • Provide editorial leadership in consultation with the ARRS Executive Council, aligned with the journal’s mission and scope.
  • Periodically review and recommend updates to the mission and scope, incorporating input from the editorial board and broader radiology community.
  • Define and implement a long-term editorial vision that reflects the evolving needs of the field.

Leadership and Management

  • Lead and collaborate with editorial board members and peer reviewers to advance shared goals and uphold editorial standards.
  • Mentor associate editors, reviewers, and early-career authors to foster professional development andhttps://r3journal.org/ editorial excellence.
  • Navigate diverse perspectives with professionalism, integrity, and respect.
  • Recruit, train, and retain a diverse and expert pool of reviewers.
  • Represent and promote R3 at the ARRS Annual Meeting and other events, as budgeted by the ARRS Executive Council.

Editorial Oversight

  • Appoint and lead associate editors, section editors, and editorial board members, subject to budget allocation by the ARRS Executive Council.
  • Ensure published content meets editorial standards and is relevant to the radiology community.
  • Oversee the peer review process to ensure fairness, timeliness, and constructive feedback.
  • Serve as the final decision-maker on all manuscript acceptances, including resolving conflicting reviews.
  • Review and advise on conflicts of interest involving authors, editors, and board members.
  • Propose and develop thematic or special issues, with guest editors as needed, for issues beyond the regular schedule.
  • Collaborate with ARRS staff to prioritize innovations in online delivery, workflow, communications, and content formats within the allocated budget.

Qualifications:

  • Publishing Experience: Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed scientific publications and experience as a reviewer. Preference will be given to candidates
  • who have served as associate editors or editors of radiology journals.
  • Education: MD or DO with expertise in radiology; broad understanding of subspecialties and emerging trends.
  • Research Acumen: Strong knowledge of study design, biostatistics, and evidence-based medicine.
  • Publication Ethics: Familiarity with standards of scientific integrity (e.g., COPE, WAME).
  • Editorial Judgment: Proven ability to evaluate the novelty, rigor, and impact of submissions.
  • Innovation Mindset: Commitment to exploring new content formats, digital platforms, and publication models.
  • ARRS Membership: Preference will be given to candidates who are ARRS members or have been previously engaged with the Society.

Compensation: The Editor-in-Chief will receive compensation commensurate with experience. The role is expected to require a time commitment of approximately 30–35%.
